ok, school me. i've got the cb... what's the radio protocol? am i supposed to have a code name and other cool stuff??? :D haha. where can i look at all the codes? all i know are:

10-4
10-20
10-9

well, i probably won't memorize most of them, but those which i think will be relavant. :) it's hard enough to hear a passenger behind my diesel - let alone one of those goofy hand held speakers!
 
Get an external speaker . I have one from a comapny called MFJ , only 12.99 , loud and clear when windows down .

And I have also used President ones , they work too :thumb:
 
Colby I went to radio shack and got a speaker to fit in the original dash location, I think it's 3x9 and run that as my external speaker works great...
 
When on the trail we never use the CB "Handle" - it's too damn hard to remeber. We just use each others names. I've been around CB's and had a ham ticket since 1980. 10 codes died in the 70's and now days we just laugh at anybody who wants a 10-36. The only codes I use are the Sheriffs department codes (and here code 7 means you want vehicle registration information not lunch) and the Ham radio "Q" codes which came from morse code and nobody seems to know - QTH=10-20= My location is.


Good rule of thumb with the radio is;
1. Listen and make sure nobody else is talking
2. Push the transmit button
3. Talk - just say who you want and what you have to say in plain language

I agree with Fumes and Pauly that some form of external speaker is important. I like the MFJ speakers and have one in my diesel, but love the idea of the speakers in the dash.
 
fumes - i dig the center speaker idea... off to radio shack i will go! :) course i'll probably have to go back about 10 - 12 times each year to get another china knock-off... :D

i'll post up some pics of what i've got in mind hopefully this weekend. :D
 
Hey W7NB anyway you could zip that power point over to me, any copy rights on it, or do you mind if i use it to familerize sum CERT team people with radio comms. let me know PM me and ill give u an email addy
 
ok, so i installed my antenae and my cb - just gotta get it some power, as well as get my wiring from the cb over to the antenna. ok, so does the inner wiring go to the antenna and the outter wiring go to the ground or viceversa?
 
If your doing an antenna mount that accepts terminals on the end of the coax , the shield ( outer braid ) is ground , and the center conductor goes to the center of the antenna .

You could also make it easy on ya , and take a short coax , cut one end off , wire it antenna . Get a long coax , and a barrel ( double female ) , and connect them that way . So you have an easy disconnect .

cool. i'll get that antenna finished up today and then all i'll have to do is figure out where i can get a connection that will plug into my cb so i'll have power. i got the cb for free - don't know a damn thing about it. i need to find a female plug to accept 3 small pointy connections about the size of a bearing in a ujoint cap. got any tips?
 
Radio Shack or any other place that even half ass sells radio gear would have a 3 prong plug cord . It will only have 2 wires coming out of the end of the cord though .

I have soldered wires on before in lieu of a plug , with heat shrink over each wire for seperation .
 
well, i didn't realize that my camera was on the BW setting... so no, it's not snowy here, but there are lots of light colored flowers blooming on the trees. :D anyway, here's pics of what i've got going on so far.

here's my antenna - not hooked up yet, but at least it's standing!

it's pretty slick. the mic/speaker hang off of the slots in the latches for the ammo box. i intend to put my stereo, if i ever get one, in the ammo box too. :D
 
If you want to learn the "true" CB lingo go to a pickle park(rest area with no light's or facilities)at night and listen.Just be sure to keep the motor running and the doors locked.
