Do K&N or other cold air intake systems improve gas mileage? they claim to improve hp but what about mpg?

last K&N kit I installed for a customer should have been tossed in the trash can .
directions sucked so bad . just a parts blow up pic and then item # match to part # to pic of part.
screw them .
other brands better and cheeper .
also gm MAF sensors don't like wet oily air filter goo on them . . . .![]()

on a carbed, stock motor, it's not gonna do a damn thing for ya... maybe a 1/4 of a hp and nothing noticeable in mpg.. and just take away from the stock appearance you've been working toward..
you'd be far better off putting in EFI to help MPG...

I hear the K&N filters actually let fine grit into the engine, and will shorten its life...I never had one,but I can see how if they let it breathe better,it must be due to less filtration...maybe they use a less restrictive filter and use the oil to hopefully catch the finer dust instead of the filter..
I remember flipping the lid on a stock air cleaner back in the day to get that cool 4 barrel sound-- and of course since it sounded meaner,it HAD to be getting better gas mileage and making more HP,right?..![]()
I ran the air cleaner lid upside down in my '89 TBI Burb for ONE DAY...
Yup, one day, especially in the middle of summer heat of Phoenix, Arizona, it was a very big difference in acceleration power from when the lid was on correctly.
Flipped it back over and been that way ever since.
The intake hose on these things is like 5" in diameter, with a stock/ish engine, I don't see how that's not enough air flow. Plus it's less surface area to attract dirt and debris, helping the filter last longer.
why would you run the lid upside down on anything other than a carburetor???
