Cold Air intakes

I'm sure they "help" but nothing that you'll notice. You wont even notice any HP gains but the colder the air is into the engine the better it will run.

on a carbed, stock motor, it's not gonna do a damn thing for ya... maybe a 1/4 of a hp and nothing noticeable in mpg.. and just take away from the stock appearance you've been working toward..

you'd be far better off putting in EFI to help MPG...

last K&N kit I installed for a customer should have been tossed in the trash can .

directions sucked so bad . just a parts blow up pic and then item # match to part # to pic of part.

screw them . :flipoff11:

other brands better and cheeper .

also gm MAF sensors don't like wet oily air filter goo on them . . . .

It's a good thing our rigs dont use a MAF sensor. Our systems are speed density and use a MAP sensor.

I do agree though that there's alot of people who buy CAI systems with an oiled filter and install them on MAF systems and wonder why they have trouble and throw MAF codes.

my old 96 c3500 crew cab with vortec 350 had cold start stumble throttle problems . traced it down to oil on the maf sensor and it was cleaned and fixed .

but yes our tbi stuff dosnt use it . or even carbed . :D

it would actually be for the Honda Pilot..right now I think the Blazer gets better gas mileage than the Pilot

if I drive the pilot 55 mph which is hard to do....It gets 330 miles plus per tank

if I drive 75 or floor it, it gets less than 200 miles per tank...

if I punch it...which I do cause I like it...you can literally see the gas meter drop and 1/8 inch...

Never any codes on the '05 Avy here. Using the K&N filter. was on there when purchased though.

There was an oily substance in the throttle blade area and in the intake plenum when I took it apart to do the rebuild awhile back though.

Maybe I'm not putting enough oil on the filter. :tongue1:

I hear the K&N filters actually let fine grit into the engine, and will shorten its life...I never had one,but I can see how if they let it breathe better,it must be due to less filtration...maybe they use a less restrictive filter and use the oil to hopefully catch the finer dust instead of the filter..

I remember flipping the lid on a stock air cleaner back in the day to get that cool 4 barrel sound-- and of course since it sounded meaner,it HAD to be getting better gas mileage and making more HP,right?..

well, it does sound cool...and since there is more filter surface exposed...maybe it does allow more air than what can be sucked in though the breather horn???

I ran the air cleaner lid upside down in my '89 TBI Burb for ONE DAY...

Yup, one day, especially in the middle of summer heat of Phoenix, Arizona, it was a very big difference in acceleration power from when the lid was on correctly.

Flipped it back over and been that way ever since.

The intake hose on these things is like 5" in diameter, with a stock/ish engine, I don't see how that's not enough air flow. Plus it's less surface area to attract dirt and debris, helping the filter last longer.

why would you run the lid upside down on anything other than a carburetor???

More available air to enter the engine versus the snorkel BUT flipping the lid now induces HOT underhood air into the engine rather than ambient outside temp air.

So flipping the lid doesn't really do anything good? Is there any harm?

Harm the engine, no. Harm power, yes. With the lid flipped it's now sucking hot underhood air, rather than cool outside air through the snorkel. Colder air is more dense, and makes better power. Underhood air tends to be dustier too, so filter life would probably be decreased.

Cold Air intakes are the biggest scam in the last 20 years IMO. Money for nothing...the majority of vehicles targeted for CAI's already draw intake air from the outside of the vehicle.

Probably make more power and save more fuel adding a NOS sticker under the hood.

I have the k&n air charger kit on a 5.7 hemi (2006 dodge magnum), better gas mileage? Not sure, pretty much always got about 18mpg. Will say this though, when you punch it you definitely get more of that jet engine whoooooosh intake sound.

I put just a k&n filter in the k30 (454 tbi), and swear I notice a more instant throttle response. The reason I put it in though is because with the Arizona dust I was changing filters every 3 or 4 months and wanted something reusable.

Yeah I just like the sound they make.....

Although a flipped lid on a 4 barrel can sound pretty good too :haha:
