color changing paint?

well i must say that i have seen a chevy that looks amazing with the color changing paint on it. I am an engineering student at the U of Md and on the hybrid-electric 2000 Suburban that we just completed building we have a paint scheme called Tahitian Sunrise. It changes colors from red to orange to gold....it is absolutely gorgeous. I get more comments about the paint when i'm driving it than the fact that we can pull 25 mpg in it. It's made by BASF and is quite expensive, we had the paint donated for the project, but i believe it was near $8,000 in paint alone....
The way it works is simple...we painted the entire Burban red, let that dry, painted on the gelcoat that makes it change colors, clearcoated, and we were done. the trick is in sanding the clearcoat, if you go too deep and hit the gelcoat, it's destroyed and you have to start over (Trust me on that one, our painter did and we had huge green spots on the truck....so $16,000 worth of paint later we got it right).
It is absolutely gorgeous, i parked my k5 next to it and wished i had that kind of money for paint.
Anyhow, several companies make this gelcoat..but BASF is the one i've delt with and it looks great.
email me if you'd like to see a pic of it. really is spectacular.

I drove a car that was painted in chromasomethingor other. I parked it in a big lot one day and wasn't really thinkin about where I parked. Came back out and couldn't find the car. From a distance it appears all one color you see, and from the perspective I was at, I couldn't find the car. Took me a couple of minutes to realize I was seeing a color I hadn't seen on the car before. I laughed a while about that one.

OK it was rather late last nite when I posted my answer on the color changing paint. Here's the deal. It is not several thin layers of paints, those are candy. This goes over a black base normally but others can be used for different cominations, and is semi transparent. It really doesnt take much to do a whole car. It's only an over coat. One gallon of these paints will do several vehicles. And then you clear over it. It is not a pearl, it is according to a rep. for RM (the company that "invented" it) it is the same type stuff that holograms are made of. The mystic came ONLY on the cobra and nothing else. YES IT IS EXPENSIVE! Applying it is not that bad. Color matching (in the cobra mystic anyway) is WAY too easy, just spray it. iI dont know how or why it works it just does and I dont question it. And finally YES I have sprayed it. But whats easy to me is not to most, I have been doing autobody almost 15 yrs. I think cutting a car in half and putting it back together is easy, and when I was still painting there was very little I would call a challenge.

sorry to sound like a know it all smart ass, but I'm just trying to clear this up for everyone.
