i've out grown my little 33 gal/5cfm craftsman. i have my eye on 2 different compressors.

this 1 from tsc:

http://www.tractorsupply.com/webapp...51|14169|48803?listingPage=true&Special=false

as you can see this one is a Campbell Hausfeld w/ 60 gal. tank, all cast iron compressor, the motor is a 3 hp/15 amp continuous duty cycle. its rated at 135 Max PSI - Flow Rate : 11.5 SCFM @ 40 PSI, 10.2 SCFM @ 90 PSI, this compressor has a standard 1 yr warranty for $399, but for $29.99 i can put a 3 yr extended warranty on this compressor, and on the stickers on the compressor it says it is an on-sight warranty. so, i asked the salesman about the service and the return rate and he said that campbell hausfeld are supossed to come to you, but he has no idea about their reliability b/c once you buy it, if you have trouble you deal w/ campbell hausfeld, but he did state that they have never had 1 returned in the 3 yrs he has worked there and that is the policy for the 1st 90 days.

and this 1 from lowes:
hmmm, they maybe making this an easy decision, b/c i can't find the air compressor they have here in the store at lowes, anywhere at all on the interweb. but fyi, its a Kobalt w/a 60 gallon tank, all cast iron compressor, the motor is a 3 hp/15 amp continuous duty cycle. its rated at 135 psi - flow rate : 13.3 SCFM@40 psi, 11.3 SCFM @ 90 psi. the compressor comes with a standard 3 yr warranty for $427, but you have to ship it off to their repair center for any repairs. Lowe's lists the exact same compressor as in the tsc link here:

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=102750-1126-VT6275&lpage=none

same 1 that tsc has for $399, for $438 and i bet thats their basic 1 yr warranty!

so basically they are equal in all aspects except the kobalt at lowes supossed to have about 1 more cfm @ 90 psi. the kobalt has a plate on top of the compressor head that you pull out 3 small phillips screws and it has a flat paper element air filter about 1''h X 4''w X 2''d( i didn't really like this setup, b/c i could tell if the filter became clogged it would cause suction & cause the filter to be sucked down a fraction of an inch, thus letting unfiltered air thru, and i could see possibly having trouble out of the small screws down the road), so kobalt -1, where as the campbell hausfeld has a 3/4'' pipe thread into a boss cast into the cast iron head where the air filter goes, it also has 2 smaller threaded holes on either side of the big threaded opening, the sales man told me they were for a different type of filter, so, theres +1 for the campbell hausfeld, it can use more than 1 type of air filter.

i did abit of searching on here, but the kobalt is limited to what you can find about them, no reviews or comparisions that i could find, whereas, i can find all kinds of info about the campbell hausfeld. so this may be a moot thread and campbell hausfeld is the clear winner, but i have a twist to throw in to the mix here shortly! so, have any of you had any experience w/ the kobalt compressor, the reason i ask is b/c the 1 extra cfm,...is....well 1 extra cfm!

i found a forum where they were talking about compressors & someone had asked the same question i have asked...it had 2 replies...the 1st one said buy an I/R....the 2nd person said they work for coleman and that both of these compressors are made by coleman and they are just marketed by different companies, that they are indeed almost the exact same compressor, just having small differences, like the air filter issue.....they are both the same color blue, but the kobalt says assembled in the usa and the campbell hausfeld said made in the usa! i know they can get by w/ saying this if a certain % of the machine is made in the usa, so not real sure on that 1. i like the campbell hausfeld's warranty being onsite and 29.99 for 3 yrs isn't that bad, plus they offer a 4 yr warranty for $49.95

now for the twist...ok we are talking about $450 on either compressor, if i buy the extended warranty on the campbell hausfeld for $29.99, & the Kobalt is $430 w/ a 3 yr warranty. so here it is, laid out for your comments and discussion! do you guys think i would be better off to just bite the bullet spend another $150 and purchase this compressor and let all my concerns for these other 2 compressors mentioned just fade away?::

i mean, if i save another month, i could get this last one and i believe they have been in business for a long time that i wouldn't ever have to worry about parts and i could have my problems addressed if i had any, but again i like the campbell hausfeld onsite warranty and campbell hausfeld has stepped their game up the last couple of yrs, so it really comes down to the $399 campbell hausfeld or the $599 I/R........i'm tempted to go get the campbell hausfeld today, but if i go I/R, i'll have to save another month, possibly 2....is there much difference in 1 CFM? btw, i didn't mention, whatever compressor i do buy is getting plumbed into another 60 gallon tank, if that really makes a difference....i'm tempted to plumb it into a 250 gal propane tank i have that is out of date to be inspected and used....370 gallons of reserve......decisions-decisions...please chime in!

I like the warranty you can get with the C/H. I also like the SCFM (faster tank recovery) of the cobalt. Personally I would go with the I/R especially if you are going to be running the system into connected tanks. I/R is to me the best. If you cant wait then I would buy the Cobalt because you have large reserve tanks and that extra SCFM will help out with motor longevity and electric bill in the long run.

A two stage Quincy is about the best piston type compressor money can buy. The Quincy comp that I am looking at does right around 28 cfm at 175psi. The price for that model is quite a bit more than what you have budgeted, but If you could find a smaller Quincy in your price range you would have a very high quality compressor that would last a life time plus and no doubt out perform just about anything in it's class. The Ingersol Rand recommendation is a good one also.

Whatever you do, make sure you get the best compressor you can afford at the time of purchase, you will be stuck with it for a long time. I wish I had known a little more about two stage compressor when I bought my first compressor. I would stay away from any compressor that is oiled for life also (meaning you don't add, check or replace oil)

I bought my compressor from Home Depot and it is Husky labeled but is a CH compressor (plate with Campbell Hausfeld stamped right on it) IIRC mine is a 6HP, 60 gallon upright. You can't go wrong with a CH or a IR IMO.

As long as you get a compressor that is at least 10 scfm's @ 90psi you'll be good. The air tools that consume lots of air are air ratchet, air grinders, air sanders.

Of the Kobalt/Cambell, I vote CH. Just because they have been around longer. And the onsite service would be nice too.

Of the 3...I'd go for the IR. Great reputation for air tools/compressors.

Like others have said, buy the biggest you can afford or think you will ever need. You can never have to much compressor.

If you put big demands on your compressor I would save for the IR. I have that very same compressor and it can keep up with my board sander which is the biggest air hog I have ever plugged into any compressor. In reality for as long as you are planning to own the thing what is the little extra money? Make sure you get the IR startup kit (oil and filter) because IR extends your warranty if you can prove you purchased it at the time of the compressor purchase the irony of course I don't believe that TSC has ever stocked the IR start up kit. In my opinion TSC stinks. You can buy it from Harbor Frieght and it will come with free shipping (which between tax and the slightly lower price @ TSC makes everything a wash). If you go that route you can order quality compressor accessories like regulator/filter/lubricator, etc and have it all delivered to your door. My local TSC has **** for accesories. Sure they will sell you a compressor but they cannot provide you with even a decent regulator or wiring. Bottom line, you end up unloading your new compressor in your garage and not the means to use it. More trips to more stores.

can keep up with my board sander which is the biggest air hog I have ever plugged into any compressor. .

quoted for truth... nothing tests a system like a longboard...

i think i am going to hold out for the IR w/18.1 CFM, that should do anything i ever want to do...even sand blasting...and i'm still tieing another 60 gal tank into this so, 1 will have 120 gal reserve w/18.1cfm-thats some serious air...i agree the $929 w/free shipping is cheaper than TSC's 899+tax...plus i get it delivered to my shop, & also, i can order a regulator & water seperator that will work, b/c i'm sure the 1's on my little 5cfm craftsman won't cut it
