Ok, so I have my "Old faithfull" 1987 Suburban 2500 with a fresh 454.
The rig was modded before I got it with air bags above the axle.
The hitch is a Valley unit that is stamped 4k dead weight and 9.5k with dist hitch.

I have been to Uhaul a bunch of times and rented a car transporter to move my projects and no probs, but this time they said NO!
They say that my hitch must be rated to 5k or I can't rent!

What are my options?

I'll look and see if I have a 5K for a 'burb. Otherwise, you can try a different rental company.

5k dead weight? That doesn't make sense.

THeir normal requirement is a 3/4 ton truck. Maybe the guy that looked at it was wacked out. Shouldn't have a problem with them renting to you with that truck.

TAKEN FROM U-HAUL WEBSITE.

Your towing vehicle:

  • Must be equipped with a hard top if it is an SUV. U-Haul does not allow any type of sport-utility vehicle not equipped with a hard top to tow U-Haul equipment.
  • Must weigh at least 3,500 lbs. (curb weight), and must equal or exceed 80% of the combined weight of the trailer (2,210 lbs.) and the vehicle being towed (up to 5,290 lbs.).
  • Must have a towing system that has a 5,000 lbs. minimum weight-carrying rating
  • Must have 1-7/8", 2" or 2-1/8" hitch ball (5,000 lbs. minimum)
  • Must not exceed maximum allowable hitch ball height 25"
  • Must have external mirrors on both sides
  • Must have fully operational lighting
  • Auto transport lighting must be operational at all times, day and night, loaded or unloaded
  • Maximum recommended speed is 55 MPH

What is the weight carrying capacity on the stock hitch? I thought it showed up at more than 5k.

Whoever you talked to is smoking crack. Go talk with the manager and have them look up your info at how many times you've rented. Or just have him look at your vehicle and go slap that kid silly.

Trust me I was mad and dont give up easy, but this is where they hung their hat...
"Must have a towing system that has a 5,000 lbs. minimum weight-carrying rating"

My hitch is a Valley unit, and as I said it says 4000lb dead weight and 9500 with a weight distruibuting system... will post a pic when I can and put some chalk in the stamps so you can read it.

I just went out to look, and all 3 of the 'burb hitches I have say the same thing.:doah: I say screw U-haul and use United or somebody else instead of bothering to fight with them over letting you spend your money with U-haul.
