Considering ditching my F350 diesel for a TBI 454 truck...

Current tow rig is a 1990 F350 4x4 7.3 IDI with Banks Sidewinder turbo kit, 5 speed, crew cab long bed. Boost is currently set at 8psi. I HATE this truck, with a fiery passion. I wanted/needed a 1 ton when I bought it, was specifically looking for a big block gas truck, not partial to any one brand at the time, and it came along at what I felt was a dirt cheap price. It's physically uncomfortable to drive any distance, and the diesel aspect is just a pain in the rear to deal with. I suppose it gets halfway decent MPGs at around 10mpg, pulling roughly 8000lbs through the Arizona mountains, never at a lack of power, but constantly having to get out of it because EGTs keep climbing to dangerous levels.

Now it's leaking oil out of basically every gasket, was due for glow plugs, injectors and fuel pump years ago, and I don't want to drop a grand plus into a truck I hate driving anyways, lol. The guys on the Ford forums say my truck is running just fine, and pulling out due to EGTs is common on these things. Newer diesels are WAY out of my budget, as in not even a pipe dream, and I refuse to finance a vehicle that rarely gets driven. Not to mention, I didn't want a diesel before, and I still don't now. I'd rather have the MPG hit than the maintenance cost hit, and it just seems like they're a PITA to drive compared to gas.

This truck, and whatever replaces it, is strictly a tow rig/heavy hauler for me, period. It will never be a daily driver, and not even likely to be a backup daily. I have a Caddy that's my current daily, and I'd take the K5, followed by the Samurai before this, lol. The F350 gets driven maybe once or twice a month now, maybe a couple hundred miles total. So I can't bring myself to spend 10K+ on something that gets used so little.

So that said, I've found the 454 TBI trucks to be within the current budget, but would this be an absolutely horrible idea if I'm planning on hauling/towing say a max of 12K combined between trailer/camper weight? Most often it would just be a K5 on a trailer, guesstimating around 7K loaded up. I know the MPGs are going to be lower than the diesel, and I don't really care about that. Just more concerned about power issues, and if I'm still going to be running 25mph up the hills like I am now.
 
Stock engine vs stock engine, the 454 tbi has similar torque so yep going to be slower since your upgraded 7.3 has more torque.
 
The TBI 454 is not a super strong motor. Mine is dead stock no mods ( in a 2wd burb). It's decent, on a couple 7% grades right out of where I live I slow down to 30 ish . That's with just about any load. I think the heaviest I have towed up that grade is probably 8500 total weight. It definitely struggles.

I get 8 mpg towing
 
The TBI 454 is not a super strong motor. Mine is dead stock no mods ( in a 2wd burb). It's decent, on a couple 7% grades right out of where I live I slow down to 30 ish . That's with just about any load. I think the heaviest I have towed up that grade is probably 8500 total weight. It definitely struggles.

What's your elevation?
 
Prepare to embrace the suck with a 454 .

They get shitty mileage , but at least they are gutless............
 
6300 ft. That pass is 8000 ft. It does make a big difference. But reality is a stock 454 is pretty weak. A little modded I bet it would seriously wake up.

So 8,000 feet=24% of a engines output.
Sure I'll admit a tbi 454 isn't much to write home Bout these days, but at sea level it's plenty to pull a car trailer with a k5 on it.
 
Spend a little more and try to find a good deal on an 8.1 truck. Its about as good as you can get for gas engine GM towing on a budget. They really do pull hard.

Oh yah I know. Getting used to driving stuff here it feels like you put forced induction on it when you drop even a couple thousand feet.

That hill kills nearly every thing hauling a trailer seen brand new Cummins hauling 2 horses slow down on that hill


I agree with the 8.1 truck though. Best gas motor for towing probably ever
 
If you don't plan to do anything to the motor performance wise, I would look for a L29 Vortec 454 truck (96-2000 GM's) or as mentioned already, look for an 8.1 truck. I've had both and were happy with both. The L29 is quite a bit of an improvement in stock form over the Gen V TBI 454. I had a 96 K2500 with the vortec 454/4l80e combo. I towed 8-10k with it about once a month and though you slow down on the steeper grades, it did pretty good everywhere else. I got 8-9 towing and 12 empty. Currently I have an 8.1/NV4500 swapped into my V3500 (stock 8.1 with a custom tune on ECM). I am very happy with the power. I still slow down a little bit on the real steep hills, but not as much as I did with the L29. Towing I get about 8 mpg's and empty I get 11-12.

And both of these trucks have been used similar to the sounds of what you will use it for. They sit in my shop and come out a few times a month when I need to haul something or if I just want to drive them just cause. I have been very happy with the low maintenance costs of the BBC's. And could care less about the low mpg's, cause again, I never daily these trucks.

Again, I would look at the Vortec 454 trucks/8.1 Trucks before the TBI 454 trucks when looking at towing
 
My 99 Burb sits for a long time maybe drive it to church on Sunday it is my tow vehicle. Has a 454 pulls rather well. An 8.1 will be my choice when I change.
