Cooling System Overhaul - Stumped and Frustrated

Uh. Apparently, when you remove the oil cooler adapter from the filter housing, you have to replace it with an oil filter adapter.

Who knew.

There goes another filter and bunch of oil.

Luckily, summit racing is between me and my job, so i'll stop and get the parts i need tomorrow. Got the trans cooler back on, decided not to space it. Figured that at lower speeds, i want the fan to suck air through it.

We'll see how it does, and if i need to get one wiht a fan on it.

Also sucked out my trans fluid and replaced. Nervous that i hurt the trans last weekend, we'll see what happens.

Quick update.

Trucks cools great now. Fixing the cooling problems allows me to tow at WOT up grades, which gets the job done, but i was between 26-32 coming up a grade for 30 min on Friday. Our boat weighs less than 5k loaded.

Sounds like the burb may be stepping down as primary tow rig. I love the old rig, but it is time for a diesel.

And I may have just put a deposit down on a Dmax suburban build....

Not sure what ....( WOT up grades... and..... but i was between 26-32.... thinking that was rpm's +00) I guess I out of the loop with all the short type but my 1990 350 4X4 suburban tows our boat (2700+ lb ) all day long (plus cross country from TX to Cali with stuff in it) in july and august every year with the a/c going and she barely hits the 200 mark and I still have the stock oil cooler and trans cooler in their stock place. I know you have replaced a lot of things on yours and still had a lot of trouble it kinda baffles me. I know our boat doesn't weigh as much as yours does at most with all the stuff in it when we go to cali 3200 possibly. But we do climb the grapevine and the mountains on hwy 50 going to Lake Tahoe...(picking up family along the way because they can't drive. Long ass blank blank trip :) ) Anyway I guess I'm saying don't give up on it.

26-32 mph.

Your boat is about 1/2 the weight. I've been towing with this thing for years, and have now solved all the cooling issues. Just moving on to get something with a bit more power. :D

Not to mention that you're towing from 6,000' to 8,000' elevation, vs. Texas' average elevation of 1700'.

I saw you mention that you're going to go to Summit. Have you used the Napa on Glendale yet? I LOVED that place. Enormous stock, and a nearby warehouse for will-call purchases made at the Glendale store. I preferred it to Summit.

Glad you got it solved. Sad that the old rigs just can't compare with the modern drivetrains for towing. :(

Yep, I'm bummed. But at the end of the day, I need a tow rig that requires less upkeep. Don't worry, the 91 isn't going anywhere. I'm excited to keep working on it when I want to, rather than when I have to.

I got rid of my 200k mile BMW, and stepped up to a newer one a year ago, and have loved how this has freed up personal time. I like projects, but getting to work and getting to the lake is a lot more stressful if it takes 4 nights of work to get there.

Guess this is part of growing up

Tell me about it. I want to go to work without being under the car until midnight the night before. :)
