Correction: T minus 17 days until California A Zone deer season opener!!!

Good Luck Mofugly,
Every area down here where I go hunting is closed because of fires. I will drive into a new area and see if anything is alive. Found out last Friday that they are closing it down.

Well, I got a pretty good forked horn opening morning at 7:00 am. Now I have six more weekends to find a biggun.

Good Job Mofugly.
I saw 2 forked horns, and a really nice short, huge (fat), stocky 3x3 that I could not connect on. Will try again next weekend.
Congrats!!!! post a picture. Good Luck on that "BIGGUN"

DAMN, that's not a respectable forked horn. That's a "biggun". I haven't seen many forked horns that size in a while, only small 2 year olds. Congrats!!!! Good Luck on catching that extra biggun.

That deer was walking through a heavily traveled trail. Is their water nearby?

You're right, it's a good forked horn. That "trail" you see isnt a game trail. I was on one side of a canyon watching a huge clearing on the other side, where I've seen many deer, this is actually the third one I've taken from the spot I was at. The other side of the canyon is about 200 yards away, and STEEP. That buck was standing about 70 yard uphill from where you see me with him. When I shot him, he started rolling, and he didn't stop, for aboot 70 yards! My brother was with me, luckily, to help me drag him back up the hill to a skid road so we could get in the Nippon Warrior and pick him up. There is plenty of water nearby, and a lot of good cover in the ravines, oaks, fir, madrone. Between ravines are large openings. The terrain ranges from steep, to really steep. I see so many deer here in the spring, they're everywhere. But come early summer, they disappear. You can hear them in the trees, but they are so damn sneaky, you never see them.

This guy I got was with two does and a fawn, and they made a ton of noise in the trees before they came running into the field. I was pretty surprised to see a good buck hanging with the does this early in the season. But he stopped in the middle of the field and gave me a perfect broadside shot. With my GPS, I figured the shot to be right around 200 yards. I tell you what though, I caught buck fever so bad, and I couldn't snuggle into a good shooting position, I told my brother "I don't know if I can make the shot". The crosshairs were all over the place. Luckily he stuck around for what seemed like an eternity, but really just a few seconds, and magically I went into the zone, and took the shot, and he dropped. Then rolled.....And that "trail" you see is actually his path from rolling through the grass. The hill doesnt look very steep in the photo, but it really is.

One other guy shot his first buck ever that morning, and another guy shot his first buck ever that evening. I got to show them how to pull the bladder without disaster. It was cool, these guys were so stoked. Good times...good times.....

Good luck to you blazin'!

Regardless man great job. Buck fever makes you feel like the first time you pulled your pants down in front of a lady, Huh!

I was surprised by the same thing I saw 3 bucks and 4 does running togeher on Saturday. Last time I saw that it rained and snowed in October. I wonder if we are going to get an earl winter.

We got more forest closures yesterday down here and they are talking about closing the rest of it down for this weekend. I hope not because I know there's a forky and a nice fat 3x3 running were I was hunting + a really nice looking bear. We'll see!!!

By the way I went to cash my lotto ticket and the guy said, "you must have won big because it's not going to let you cash it today." Come back tomorrow to see how much you won. Can't wait to collect $10 dollars. Good Luck, Mofugly. I hope you and your brother get a pair of BIGGUNS. Later man.

Blazin, I got my second buck Friday morning, this one was with three does as well. nice tall horns for a younger buck.

That's great Mofugly.

I have been still trying to get to know the area that I am hunting in. My other areas are closed due to the Zaca fire. I have seen deer but in the back of other peoples packs or trucks. I am going out on Thursday and will hopefully bring back a buck. Congrats. I have been wondering about you since you haven't posted up anything since opening weekend.
MMMMMM....... sausage.

Mofugly,

Did you get that buck in the same area as the one on opening day? Thats a real nice one. It looks big also. Is it a 3x2? The bucks that have come out of where Im hunting also have swollen necks. I have seen a lot of scrapes from mature bucks on the ground and hoof scrapes from bucks mounting the does.

He was about a mile away from my opener buck, but on the same ridge. I got up there thurs. night and was out in the hills at first light friday morning. The weather was chilly and foggy and I was seeing groups of does on every ridge, I saw 28 does before I ran into this buck. I was the only one in camp to get a deer this weekend. By Friday afternoon the weather was into the 90's again and the deer disappeared. I got pretty lucky this year! There's still a bit of velvet left on the side with three points. The other side, the fork is actually pretty small, but the horns were so tall and wide, I couldn't pass this guy up. I have a feeling that the last two weekends will bring a lot of nice bucks into camp, then it's all over for another year.....

I will be going up tomorrow! I got the day off. I found a real good place on Saturday evening and I know Im coming back with some strap.

Good luck brother! I'll be going to camp this weekend to do some work on the cabin, and see what every one else is bringing into camp. 'Fumes! I hope you can find some time to get into the woods. And blazin', good luck!

Woke up at 3am and was out the door by 3:30. Hit the trail by 6:15, at 1:00pm and 4-5 miles later I had not seen one thing. I don't know what was going on. Very weird to have not seen one doe. I had that strange feeling all day long that something or someone was watching me. Kept on looking over my back. When I got back to the truck I was the only around for miles. Will be going up again on Saturday. We'll see what happens.

Mofugly

Mofugly haven't heard from you in a while. Are you itchin to get up and smell the powder when it cracks and thumps on that purdy buck you've been chasin'?

August 9th is right around the corner and don't forget COPPER bullets. Barne's paid Arnold a lot of money to pass that law.

Let me know how your doing and if you have done any scouting?

Ernie

I replied to your PM. And yeah, I'm itchin' to get out in the field. I havent been able to go scouting as much as I would like to this year. I'm going to the cabin next weekend to sight in my rifle, hopefully do some scouting. I did load up 100 rounds fo the -06 last week. My zone isn't in the affected area, so I still get to use lead-core bullets. Good thing too, last year I bought 1000 Speer Grand Slams in bulk! I should try some of those copper bullets out. though, I'm sure that law will slowly begin to cover all of California.
