Cost of Dana 60 front, rant

Found a running but completely rusted '78 K30 for $750. Had a buddy that constantly bought and sold cars, car parts, trailers, etc... for profit and always kept an eye out for D60's. He probably bought and sold 30-40 kingpin D60's over a 10 year period (Ford, GM, Dodge)...he would never pay more than maybe $200 for them and always wanted to get them re-sold within a week or two. They usually came from junkyards that didn't know what they had. He generally asked around $750 for the Ford high pinions, $500 for GM's, and $400 for the Dodge versions.

60's have gotten stupidly expensive. Different parts of the country cost a LOT more. I used to see them all day up in the NE for less than $500, got mine down here for a couple of times that much and it was a good deal at the time.

I got a Ford HP 60 front in part trade a few years back. Was eventually going under my blazer. It needed everything as most D60 fronts do, but was a good builder. After I sold my Blazer I sold the D60 for $1500 in a matter of days. I had a few whiners bitch at me over the ask price...you know the facebook warrior types. First guy that actually knew how scarce these were getting and all snapped it up without even dickering.

On the flip side the CUCV D60 I bought for my 81 Jimmy in '02 I paid $1500 for. Low mile, needed nothing but some paint...

I can get a 79 dually with 4.56s running and driving, crate 350, rebuilt 400/203, narrow 14 bolt for $1500. was gonna get it, but with 4 in the family, ain't big enough. Thought bout a toy hauler, but, ain't big enough, still need a trailer. I drove by it the other day, sits in same spot. Guess wasn't in too much a hurry to sell it. I gave up buying/selling these, I don't find hardly any anymore. Anymore, I could care less. I kinda regret selling the wholy grail of 60s, the 78/79 HP60, but only going with 35s, so be overkill.

The 05+ superduty 60 coming in clutch at about 250-500 nowadays.
High pinion, big tubes, 35 spline stock, 1550 capable.
It's got it goin on. Driver drop and coilover time bubba.

those are triple the price around here now. I’ve been keeping my eye open for a pair of those axles for a while.

I think the trouble is that if you only search for ads that specifically state a D60, that means the person selling it knows what they have. You need to keep your eyes out for random trucks and axles for sale, sitting out back behind the barn, or junkyards that are just trying to turn stuff around as quick as possible.

So I buy from places that sell by weight and dont care what it is other than iron. Also I buy privately from people not into hustling 4x4 parts.
Secrets out.

I would mostly buy from junkyards and private owners, that don't know what they have. I paid $150 for a 78/79 HP60. most I paid for a complete truck was $500 I think. I got a truck for free, sold the axles before even took possession of the truck. They are still out there, but they are getting few and far between. Any many are figuring out what they have....

Good point above about availability.......keep in mind that a factory Chevy truck with a D60 has not been available for 30 years now.

around here they want stupid prices, $1000-1500 on average for a GM kingpin that needs rebuilt or re-geared, $900 if its a dually. The superduty 60's are $1000 and usually missing hubs or axle shafts.

Mountainexplorer bought them all.

What ever happened to that guy? Alan, i think.

He has 20+ on his property. Hope he didn't kick the bucket and leave them all rotting on his property.

He is alive and well

@BoondocK5 I know where a bunch are and they are for sale well they are the coveted HP60's ........ You just have to ask ..... Haven't looked at them in a year so they should still be their.

Let's contrast this "problem" to the rest of the world by thinking about what it takes to bolt a D60 into any jeep. $7-8K to get in the door and even if you play the junkyard game (totally possible now) you're still not just bolting them in like us, AFTER you do all the same rebuild/upgrade stuff. And compare that axle that you just rebuilt with some upgrades for $3-4K to a dynatrac/spicer/tera/whatever axle at double that, minimum. Junkyard axles are still stupid cheap and the fact that we can swap them into a square with a couple hundo in parts (at most) using hand tools is pretty amazing.

I think our glass is 3/4 full!
