Looking at getting a real welding jacket, as the heavy flannel shirt I was using is about burnt through =))

Anyway, besides the obvious leather choice, I saw a cotton one. I mean, huh? Is it like chemically treated or something to protect from spatter and sparks... or is it just crap?

It's cheap, and that always makes me worry...

To be honest I never use a welding jacket. Usually a T-shirt under my coveralls is about all. If you're not willing to accept the occassional spatter burn leather is the best bet.

Tough-skinned bastard ;)

Second issue is that I am as white as white can be and I sunburn from the UV, so I gotta at least cover the skin. :doah:

Yeah, yeah, I'm a wuss...

I'm a welder for a living and all I wear at work is coveralls and works just fine.

The UV is definitely something to protect yourself from...regardless of how easy you burn (or don't) in the sun. 30 seconds exposure when welding is enough to give you a nasty burn...which should give you an idea of how strong the UV is coming off the arc.

The small bits of spatter that do make it through my coveralls only burn for a second or two, and you just get used to it.

The thing that kills me is that inevitably splatter will let know know about every little pin hole in your gloves as it bounces around inside your gloves burning your hands to crap lmao

Your lucky when it's ONLY your hand!

Nothing like slag in the crotch to get ya dancin the jig.... :doah::haha:

I wear the mid forearm length welding gloves. As soon as there is a hole in em I replace them.

Spatter in the ear is nasty too. Happens pretty rarely because 95% of the time I have my ear plugs in...

My worst for burns was having a liquid red hot tack I just put in...drop out and land on my wedding ring. Yes, I was not wearing gloves, and yes I was wearing my wedding ring at work. This was quite a long time ago.

Anyways, Gold being the superconductor that it is, the ring instantly went to about 7 million F. I tried to pull it off but it took all the skin around my finger with it <yech>

I finally did get it off, bandaged my finger up and went back to work. I looked at the ring and there was a BB sized piece of steel melted into the ring. Needless to say my wife never said a word about me not wearing my wedding ring after that.

Oddly enough, that burn didn't really hurt after the first second or so. I never missed any work, and it healed up nicely without getting infected. When I first did it I thought it was going to be a MOFO while healing up...but it never was.

On the other hand, Good welding protection I believe can make you a better welder till you get to the point where you are "use to it." A red hot chunk of splatter getting caught in the crook of your arm does little for makin' ya steady!:haha:

Yep, you'll get use to it. Might take a few welds but eventually.

My worst was many moons ago. I dropped a puddle, don't remember the position but it went directly in the shoe string hole in my boot. Still wearing that scar today. Just aint no way you can get that boot off fast enough.

I got a few os them foot scars myself :D

I usually dont wear anything, generally if I wear something its becuase im welding overhead. Ive still got the coat that is full of burnholes ffrom when I found out I suck at overhead.

Drey, Overhead isn't so bad.

*Raises BS flag.*

I wear leather sleeves and welding gloves. It makes beads so much nicer since you're not screaming "OW, ****" from under your helmet every 30 seconds.

Thirty Seconds...

When I was welding on the corn cracker at work there was a steady stream of profanity every time I pulled the trigger
