So, im trying to be responsible, and save money, and try not to overcharge my accounts, and keep money in the bank to pay bills and all that jazz, and im doin pretty good. So i just went through a round of paying bills this month, and still have about $1300 in the account. I found a DRW D60 front axle for a SICK price, and have talked myself into buying it, only $485 or so. 4.10 gears, open diff. Pretty much a no brainer. I just have to drive to jersey to get it. Not really a big deal.

So after talking to the guy some more, he casually mentions he's got the matching DRW D70 rear axle, same 4.10 gears, open diff. both are complete ready to go. He wants $265 for the D70, i talked him up, and worked a deal for both.... $650 for both.

I know its a friggin sick deal on the pair of axles that i would be CRAZY not to take, but with just $1300 in the bank, and two weeks to the next paycheck, i dunno if i should. Realistically Even if i just buy the DRW D60, I can find a DRW 14 bolt just about anywhere for dirt cheap. Its not like im doing the swap anytime soon, just kinda collecting parts so i can do everything at once.

So what do yall think, be somewhat responsible and just get the D60.... or damn the torpedos grab the sick nasty deal and get the matching set.

Top Ramen is cheap and will carry you through to the next paycheck. However, I'd go with a Corp14ff instead of the D70.

well actually i want the DRW axle, ill just need to swap SRW hubs to match the WMS of the DRW D60 front axle. Im running H1 beadlocks with the 1 tons. and dont want spacers.

Im doing lots of D70 vs 14bff reading online, and it does seem most people like the 14bff for its 3 pinion bearings, easy setup for gear adjustment, and its detroit locker is pretty cheap compared to others apparently. Also parts availability and aftermarket support seems to be much better for the 14bff.

but ive heard conflicting reports on the D70 some say its got 1.75in shafts, some say 1.5in, some say 30 spline, some say 35 spline..... i know sweetk30 hooked me up with a crap ton of info, i need to go find that thread and re-read it.

yeah, it would be nice to have both axles accounted for, and not have to worry about it later, but i think ill pass on the D70, the guy said he probably had a buyer for it anyway.

The 14bff seems to have more benefits for roughly the same strength, and my parents wont **** as many kittens when i bring home more car parts. :D

Make sure it is a D70HD if you want to run the 14bolt hubs. Your going to regret not buying it later.
I also got lucky a few years back and picked up a DRW D60 for $500. Traded a NP205 for the D70HD.

well... maybe ill play it by ear, he offered me the pair for 650, say, 450 for the D60 and 200 for the D70..... maybe if he just really wants to get rid of it, and sells it to me for 100 bucks, ill take it.

how do i tell a D70 from a D70HD??????

Casting should have either d70 or d70hd stamped in.

If you have a family or are over say 25 yrs old you should pass altogether until you have all your bills paid off and have decent emergency funds saved up. BTDT.

Find enough of them for me to make the trip, and I'll come buy a trailer load.

I was just thinking this yesterday when I read what Stomis said in another thread.

And I voted get the 60 and worry about the rear later.

avenger - nope, no family, and the only non-monthly bill i have is my car payment. which ive got pretty well covered. but good advice though.

he seemed to have mentioned his parents having a crap about bringing home more car parts..............I wouldn't worry too much about it.

D70 and D70HD ...............dead ringer. the HD70 has 4" tubes the regular D70 rear does not. its 3" or 3.5"

well good thing i didnt commit to the rear axle...... i forgot about my brothers wedding in costa rica next year, were all buying tickets tonight so we can leave and arrive together..... just dropped $500 on plane tickets. good thing ive got a bouncing gig tomorrow for some extra cash... top ramin it is for a little while lol.

thanks all for the unanimous good advice ;)

If you trust him maybe he'll hold it with a deposit.

well he came well recomended by another ck5'r, id have to find the thread to remember exactly who, the guy selling the axles is in manville NJ, name of Rich. ebay name offroadrichie. seems like a real stand up guy, but i dont want to string him along and have him hold that axle for me for who knows how long till i get a day off work, when i have money in the bank, to drive all the way back up to NJ to get the axle. especially if he may have another buyer.

Im pretty sure i can find the DRW 14bff i need somewhere closer than NJ. And im starting to lean towards that more due to the benifits of the 14 bolt. although a matched Dana60/Dana70HD drivetrain would be pretty frickin cool.

EDIT - quick forum search, it was r2d2 that recomended him.

Shouldn't be hard to find a 14FF under a DRW 88-98 truck.
