There was a kit sold by JC Whitney to convert the rear to dual wheels back in the day. Basically, just a spacer between the wheels.

Yeah, but when I was 18 with my first pickup, the JC Whitney catalog was like the Sears Christmas catalog when I was 10.
Those adapter kits were good for our towing business. Broken rear axles were common. The Toyota's were more common.
Every time I see one of those dually Toyota rvs out here in the west I think holy shit that's gotta be the slowest thing every on the highway in the mountains.
