Cricket in new engine

One thing that concerns me. When I pulled the plugs they had a very strong gas smell. Is that because the engine had last been idling while troubleshooting the cricket noise? I hadn't ever noticed something like that before when pulling plugs. But I also have idled a vehicle for a while before pulling plugs.
Fuel wash can cause scoring. Not saying that it happened, but it is a noted symptom of unburnt fuel, excessive fuel, etc.

Only time I've run in to that was on dad's 302 when the custom carb the shop installed was pouring gas from the back bowl into the cylinders and washing them out. We had a ton of blow by and bad compression. Swapped to a different carb and ran it a while and all issues went away.

I'm hoping this isn't what happened as that would mean I'm having another problem with the PF4. It just struck me how strong the smell was when I pulled the plugs. I don't know if it was all of them, but it was definitely more than 1.

Sorry, I've been updating in the C10 thread.

They sent me a replacement engine, and I verified it was a different engine by the casing numbers. At least I know for sure the block was different. The entire process took about 6 weeks from when I shipped out the bad one and received the new one. All in all, the only complaint is the time it took but the reality is there's not much you can do about that. The warranty claim process was easy and they never once made me feel like they were questioning the validity. I probably helped that I had video. They never asked who installed the engine either.

The new engine came already painted orange which was nice. There was oil in the lifter valley which the other engine didn't have so I'm thinking they probably primed the oil system. The other thing I noted is the first engine crate was tagged with "Hecho in Mexico" and the replacement engine was marked "Made in the USA".

I've got over 1100 miles on the replacement engine and everything is looking good. It pulls strong and it's definitely an improvement over what I had. I've done enough fueling to feel confident in saying the fuel mileage is better with the new engine. I'm getting a little over 13mpg and I was getting a little over 11mpg with the old engine. Having just a 20 gallon tank, it's noticeable. When I see the tank is getting low, I'm surprised how many miles are on the trip odometer.
