crossover or locker " update. installing the crossover "

i use to have a 14ff with 38" tires on dd duty with my old 1ton. i had a detroit in the rear. i never felt it unlock at all. tires chirrped all the time.

then i found a like new take out gov-loc and smokin deal for it so i grabbed it up. swaped that in and had tons of fun drove much better and tires locked up when needed nover gave me a lick of trubble.

i even reused the gov-loc in another truck after i parted out the old 1ton. if me to do again crossover and gov-loc rear. wouldnt waste my time with detroit in the rear. and drivin in the snow with detroit was a P.I.T.A always had to lock it in 4wd with min snow on the ground or it always wanted to have the rear come meet up with the front end.

Well didnt think of it that way. winter is early this year, feels lie lots of snow ahead. Maybe a good call. Install the govlok and get the crossover.

i still say crossover, even with a locker in the rear of your truck what good does it do if your fourwheeling and flexing good and you cant steer your front anywhere. id go with crossover personally, better road manners and good on the trail
 
I'm thinking if its a DD, steering would take precedent over the locker. You drive it like it is, so is it squirrely driving? That would make for a definite crossover in my book, but if it drives good, then go for the locker, IF your really sure you want a non-selectable locker in the snow and ice????
 
I'd say detroit. A locker is going help much more than steering. Since the 4" 47" springs still kind of steer when flex up.
 
You've already got a good locker......buy the crossover and be done with it.

Save for the detroit if you're not happy with the gov-loc.
 
I say go with the crossover...I'm locked w/detroits f&r w/stock steerin on 36's & it totally sux trying to steer thru stuff...I'm goin full hydraulic soon so I'll b all good soon...lockers are a great mod but like stated b4 if u already have a gov-loc, use it and get tha x-over...if ur still not satisfied, save for the locker later...
 
Go with the gov loc. My suburban came stock with a gov loc and 4.10s in the 14b FF. Never had a problem with it. Always worked right when it was needed. I've wheeled in Colorado and Moab with it, as well as beat the snot out of it drag racing and sled pulling.


A little story to atest to the strength of the gov loc in a 14B FF....

One day, earlier this year, I was pulling out of the gas station onto the road. Well, it's kind of on a blind corner, and right as I was pulling out, I caught a glimpse of a car flying up.

I proceeded to mash on the go pedal, and before the gov loc knew what was happening, the inside rear tire was spinning. Once it "kicked" in, the burb went from spinning 1 tire, to a smokey drift in a milisecond. It made a very loud thud when it locked, and I thought for sure I would be picking up pieces, but it held, and is still working fine to this day.

Keep in mind, this is a 8000lb suburban (4000 on front wheels, 4000 on rear), on 35" tires with a 12v cummins that dyno'd at 790ft lbs. At the time when the gov loc kicked in, the boost gauge was pegged at 40lbs.

To me, that's quite impressive for the supposedly weak gov loc.
 
I haven't seen a 14BFF govlock break, but I have in 14BSF and 10B applications.
 
i have never seen one that wasnt broke. the last 3 14 bolts i have opened up have had the same small gear lookin thing stripped of all its teeth.
2 where at the j-yard, and one was in my truck....

actually kinda funny, i had 4.10s rear, and 4.88 front, so i traded my brother rear axles since he had 4.10 front, and 3.73 rear. that way i only had to set up one axle. mine. i installed the 4.88s and a spool. then my brother decided he wanted a spool too. turns out the axle i traded to him had a lunched g-bomb, so we had to go to the j-yard to get an open carrier. the first two axles we looked at where broken g-bombs. both the same gear stripped of its teeth.

even though its probably too late, i would either
a= buy the detroit
b= spool and a crossover steering arm
 
If the locker will save you some coin that is the way to go even if you don't install it right away.

Sure glad I bought my 14FF Detroit back when they were $299.00. :D
 
I was going to keep my gov-loc to put money elsewhere in my project, perhaps like you, but when I opened up the case almost all the teeth on the little gear were gone. The decision was made for me. Get a big #3 phillips and make sure yours is good if you haven't already. When you get it open and see how small that crap is and abruptly it engages you'll be amazed they don't all explode all the time. If you go detroit it's one less thing to worry about breaking. It doesn't take long to get used to it's characteristics. It just feels right in an old K5.

The detroit unlocks on pretty much every turn, however, since it only allows the outside tire to spin faster, you are still driving the inside tire. So if you are on the gas at all you will squeal/chirp the inside tire since the weight shifts to the outside, and the inside tire is on the smaller radius. I like my detroit a lot, it's always there when I need it, and during normal conservative driving, you don't even know it's there.

In the winter it does kick out easier, but it's very predictable.

So, DID you get the detroit?
 
I vote crossover as well especially since ORD is having an XMAS sale as well. You could use the Gov Lock and IF it ever breaks then get a detroit.
 
Looks like I will be going crossover.

I will install the govlok and see how it lasts.
