crossover steering questions

I have a 2.5" lift on and 82 K3500 and the ORD crossover set up works fine. I'm not a big wheeler, so I haven't flexed the hell out of the front end yet. But, I did look it over pretty well in the driveway and worked the suspension with the floor jack.

Steers nice now!

One little disclaimer. I did the suspension lift with Ranch springs about 15 years ago. I swear the lift was more than 2.5". When I called Rancho, they told me the stock front springs were notorious for sagging (true) and that's why it measured more than 2.5". But, I was told I shouldn't have to relocate my brake lines and I did if I didn't want to tear them off if my suspension ever fully extended.

If you'd like, we can compare measurments from the spring perches on the axle to the mouting surface of the stock bump stop ... or somewhere else that would give a good comparison of our suspension lifts.

Like Rene, mine's close but not too close. I've just put mine on and looking at it I reckon you'd get away with DRIVING it with a smaller lift but wheelin' would be a no no.
Oh...and brace your frame up if you haven't already done it. Cross over on mine REALLY pulls the truck around over the axle. It takes some getting used to!

thanks for the info :)

now when you say this can you give me more details?

When you say "brace the frame". In what way, specificly, would you brace it, and where?

Im thinking steering brace too as load are more perpendicular to the frame as apposed to push pull steering.

Yeah, the ORD set up I have seems to have more 'turning capacity' than the axle for some reason and when you get to almost full lock on the steering box, the wheels can't turn anymore so it pulls the truck across the axle/springs. It's kinda weird and hard to explain but the trucks rocks side to side as you come on and off full lock.

PS.... Mr MODERATOR...I was REALLY hoping CK5 wouldn't fall victim to this really annoying underlined/linked words from sponsors. If you need the extra money can't you just put the subs up a bit. You never know if it's a genuine members link he's put in or a bloody advert! (gripe and hi-jack over)

I used the ORD steering brace, plus where I took off the sway bar I bolted that area back up and also I'm just making a bracket to triangulate the other side of the cross member (pass side). And if you've removed your front bumper outriggers, bolt that area back up to. It all ties in together.
This cross over seems a lot more powerfull than the stock set up unless it's just that it's pushing/pulling side to side instead of front to back like before but it certainly seems to test all your frame cross member rivets and brackets!

Mudhog,

PM stallin85. He has crossover and he runs a 2 1/2" lift with 35's. As far as I know he hasn't really had any major issues with his and he wheels the crap out of his K5. :D

where do you see this at?

IIRC dodgeforum, pirate4x4? and a few other sites I've visited. Really bugs me! lol

i was asking where he saw that on this site?
REALLY sorry!:doah: It was on 1tons post and he had put in a genuine link. I didn't follow the link 'cause I got so hacked off following links on other sites that led to an advert!
My appolagies:o but it does go to show that sponsored links suck!:D

Shannon did you see this post? If you haven't gotten a pitman arm yet this will solve the spring pitman arm issue for low lifts. The crossmember/draglink issue should not arise until the suspension is compressed I would think. I may look into this arm as well because I can get close to my pitman arm with my driver side spring. I know you shouldn't arch the springs negatively, but it happens:eek1:

You can also just swap a 2wd sector shaft into your 4wd box - thats what I did and it works great!

I definately recommend going with an ORD steering brace too.

Mudhog , with the small lift that you have , I would go with a 2.5 drop pittman arm our do like I did and get a ford van pittman arm at upullit for $5.00 and just ream it out for a chevy tierod . I bought the reamer at Hall tool down on MLK . I built my own steering arm out of 1.50 x 1/4 dom with welded on threaded inserts . I did not bend my link and I still had some good contact with the engine cross member that needed some mod's . you will also need to have some good bump stop's to keep your spring clamp from hitting the pittman arm . I'm close by so I could drive my burb over to show you how it works .
