I don't quite understand what I will need for crossover. I have looked at the kit from ORD. I know I will need a 2wd box. If you can tell form my pic will I have to do anything else like machining or draglink or.......

I'm no expert, but i can tell you what i did. I just completed it last weekend.
I bought a D44 - 8 lug running gear. I removed the knuckles and had MuddyTaz drill and tap the passenger side to match the drivers side. I then bought sky mfg arm and stud kit. I assembled the componets and bought a sky mfg tie rod. That was just the beginning. From there i went to the wrecking yard and bought a 2WD steering box from a 1978 suburban. I also grabbed a pitman from a 1978 bronco, but i felt it was to whimpy so i bought an aftermarket trailmaster ford drop pitman arm. I then didn't like the steering shaft so i replaced it with a 1991 jeep cherokee steering shaft. I did extra work to it so i had splines on both ends. Anyway below is the final working componets.

That is what I thought. I cannot just buy a kit that can bolt right in. I may have to drill knuckles. I may need to use pitman arms from other vehicles etc etc etc. Is there a kit you can buy that is for my year of axles and my k5? I was hoping I did not have to hit the junkyards and order other kits. :doah:

ORD is a complete kit without the knuckle. you want your knuckles to match. unless you are going complete hi-steer. the angles/lengths of the tierod mount can vary between knuckles. this will have an effect on your steering. get the part number from the knuckle they will send you. it should be one number off from your driver side knuckle.

You can still use your existing 4wd steering box if you're doing regular crossover or high steer... you only need the 2wd steering box when you're going hydro assist or full hydro

I would like to do this as cheap as possible. If I do not have to change to a 2wd box that is even better. I am not going to do hydro. I would like to get rid of the k5 pulling to the right when I am zooming down the freeway with an 8in lift. It will be a part time daily driver and a light wheeler. What is the cheapest and easiest way

then you're good to go... dana 44 already have the flat tops on the knuckles so just call up ORD or WFO concepts and they ll hook you up with a pitman arm, draglink and steering arm... thats it!

Looks like I am going to go with this kit. Thanks for all the respones.

If the price is right, to me that looks like a good kit. I spent little over $200 for the daglink and steer arm with studkit. Then $70 for the pitman arm, $40 for the knuckle prep, $8 for the steering box, $5 for the jeep steer shaft. So i prolly have about $350 into mine.

HUH? how do you get around the shaft difference?

Not all dana 44's had flattops on both sides. even if they did he would still have to get machine work done. its more then just drilling holes and tapping them. the passenger side is rough and at least a 16th high.

Thanks I like this route.

how so,

one box opperates side to side, other is front to back

only option to retain the factory box and have cross over the passanger knuckle is to swap sector shafts, or use a custo or resplined pitman arm.

I know....thats why I said what you quoted me.... In a later post, I said ORD or WFO or any other place will include a pitman arm in their crossover kit that works side to side instead of front to rear.
