Cummins 6.7

As far as fords go, we have to remember that the 6.0 is a brand new design and problems always occur with new designs. the 6.6 had problems at first, granted not as much as the 6.0, but it still had problems. I for one am curious to see how the diesel wars will turn out in the next few years.

Actually I not sure about other years for the VE pump . The pump doesn't make it louder . the " first gens" are just louder (for many reasons one being the lack of sound isulation on those trucks . The reason I said a 1993 is because I beleive it's the Pinnacle year of that body style. dana 60's, leaf springs, NV4500,NP205, The Best Mech pump of all 12 valves and it's intercooled (92 was also inercooled but it used the Gay-trag tranny) That should be an awesome swap I've always wanted to do that

Gothca ! I just didn't know if you had new info on the "VE" pumps that I was not aware of . I was hoping to find a donor with the "P-7100" but I could not pas up the deal on this "VE" equiped donor truck.
Thanks , Tom

Okay so it's about the Noise . You like the sound of 2 Skeletons Screwing on a Tin roof . That's cool I can see that get ya 93' there the loudest of the crew and mave the best Injection pump (Bosch VE)
For one the VE rotary pump plain sucks compared to the later P7100 inline pump. It's not the pump that makes the Cummins sound. The loudest Cummins is a 1998.5 to 2002 Ram Cummins. It's the twice as many valves 'a-clickin' that gives that great sound.

Oh, and it's not only that it sounds like a real engine, thats kind of a smaller part, it's that it's for the most part a simpler setup that is easier to diagnose and work on.

Well I thought the VE is the "Million Mile Pump"

I've never heard that before, but that doesn't mean anything.......

but the rotary has 1 pumping element pushing for 6 holes. the P7100 has 6 elements, 1 per hole. On that basis alone the p7100 is a superior pump. besides the fact that the inline can be setup to move much more fuel than a rotary for a rodded engine.

my '98.5 24 valve is plenty whorin' loud, but I like it. and I'll be ditching the muffler shortly.

LMAO :haha: :haha:

I dont really like all the noise that older cummins's make but that will not stop me from putting one in my DD.

Heh. :haha: Me, I want my diesel to be as quiet as a gas motor. I don't like all the clattering, I want it to purr.

The thing is, the 6.0 suffers from "value engineering" that caused it to be a horrible piece of crap. They tried getting away with using too few head bolts and ended up having to redesign the head and block to accomodate enough bolts to withstand the cylinder pressure without blowing the head gasket. Fundamental flaws like that go way beyond normal first year problems.

From what I understand, they tossed the whole 6.0 platform and just reduced displacement on the 7.3 for the next gen 6.4.

Beyond that, the diesel wars are going to get interesting. Toyota and Nissan both are going to be entering the fray in the next year or two. That's certainly going to shake things up.

negative. the new 6.4 only has four head bolts. at least that i can see.

pretty much the same engine "family" as the 6.0.

Well I don't Know a whole lot about Cummins Motors but the little I do say's that the 93 's are the Longest lasting of all the 5.9's . I also don't know alot about hot rodding Diesels ( I was taught to leave them alone so they last longer if you want to hot rod get a gas motor diesels are for workin') all I was refering to was longevity (and yes Inline pumps are better than rotory (also known as Distributor Type Ijection Pump by us Wingnuts) Pump aside I still think the 93 is the best Dodge truck ever built

No, they are not. The later 24v motors last longer.

What a person thinks, and which years are actually superior to others is two different things.:D

Any 2nd gen is a better truck in nearly every way than the 1st gens, like the '93...

Well I don't Know a whole lot about Cummins Motors
Well duh....:p: :thumb:

Well I still think the 93 is a better "truck" Locking hubs ,leafsprings, Serviceable Wheel bearings,Kingpins, P-side drop, Now the 2nd gens are Nicer but I don't think there as tough (Motor, trans, and rearend aside) the ball joint coilsprung unit bearing,C.A.D. Crap excuse for a dana 60 they put in those trucks suck IMO .the track bar wear's fast especially with the diesel and/or oversize tires And the Interior is to plasticy for my taste . That being said I would still buy any dodge over a Ford or Chevy Diesel pickup, I do know a bit about Diesels I work on Generators for a Living Just not alot about Trucks/equipment ( yes I know alot of it is the same ) alot of are units have the 5.9's and the 8.3's with no failures ever in my 8 years so mostly Just PMI's and the Occasinal seal/gasket replacement

Some of this is opinion, but most is preferance. A 1993 has locking hubs, inferior to later flanges and CAD system. No having to get out to lock hubs, and no goofy holes in the the front center cap.

Leaf springs-
Yes, the 1993 uses old techonolgy. Inferior leaf springs to later much smoother 4 link coil suspension that also can bear more weight.

Serviceable wheel bearings-
You got me there, that is better than sealed unit bearings, a lot better.

kingpins-
while the kingpins are marginally better, there really isn't the problems with failing ball joints left and right like you hear on the internet.

Passenger side drop-
I love this one. Inferior, everything is driverside drop regardless of brand and has been that way for roughly 10+years. Passenger side drop mates to old outdated, technologically speaking, vehicles.

Front D60-
It's every bit as tough as the older 60, with advantages and drawbacks. It uses the better CAD system over manual lock out hubs. It has unit bearings and not serviceable bearings. (this is basically a give or take thing, so I'll stop there)

Tracking systems on both trucks-
while there has been some problems with the track bars on 2nd gens, the trucks still track much better than the older models with leaf springs.

Interior,
Yes, the 2nd gens use more plastic. Not a lot more, besides the bottom part of the dash, my 1976 Chevy C30 has about as much plastic and rubber inside as my 2001 Ram does. Door panels, top of dash, guage cluster, etc.

My point is, while the 1993 is indeed the cream of the crop for 1st gen trucks, it's still the cream of the crop of 70's/80's technology and is inferior in most ways to later designs.

An engine with only 4 head bolts?

Are you sure?

Four bolts per cylinder

Yes, I'm sure.

That's too bad. But I guess some people have to stick their finger in the light socket a few times before they learn...

At least Toyota and Nissan are coming out with HD diesels.

Okay Alot of it is opinion . But theres now way the Cad system is Better It's Junk all the way back to 81 when they started that Crap  on the 1/2 ton Dodges and ramchargers and some 3/4 tons The ONLY "upside " to the CAD is no hubs to unlock. But they make Auto locking hubs For the Kingpin Dana 60 (or the later ford Ball joint 60's up to 98.5) If your too lazy to get out and lock your hubs:eek1: (and know your locked in ) then I guess having a weaker axle might be a good trade off . Now I think the 2nd and 3rd gen trucks are Currently the best Trucks built of the Big 3 But the Dodge frontend Does Have a High rate of eating up trackbars and Balljoints (personel Experiance) Here's Something to bring it into perspective . How many people are searching out late Model Dodge axles to put Under there 4x4's??? Our why would Companys like Dynatrac Make kits to convert Dodge (and newer unit bearing fords)to Servicable bearings and one piece inner axles?? I like my trucks to be just that "TRUCKS" if I was worried about the rough ride I'd buy a Caddy and put a big Pink Feather in my hat and go PIMPIN' for hoes in da hood dawg.:D ......okay I'm getting of track MY POINT 93 Dodge The best Combination of parts ever offered alot like the 87 K30 fuel injected 454-sm465/th400-Np205 KINGPIN 60 and a 14bolt rear and LEAFSPRINGS:bow:    Torsion bars and coils are for sissy's:D :D

93 is the best Dodge truck ever, all the ones after that are ugly as a sin and the only reason anyone buys them in the engine. If dodge did not have the cummins they would have gone under a long time ago.
