Cummins engine knowledge request

Yeah it puts on the check engine light and goes into limp mode.

The road miles might be the issue. It's mostly all town driving followed by idling with the PTO running.

You replied while I was typing, what codes does it have ? Some codes such as exhaust temp sensors can keep it from regen.

Unfortunately we don't have a code reader for it. We end up having to pay someone to check it out and it always ends being the regen.

Might be loaded up with enough ash at this point to require a dpf cleaning. I'd say try driving it good and hard for like an hour on the freeway and if that doesn't take care of it you are gonna have to go to someone with a scanner that can hook to it.

At this point I'm thinking we need to invest in a scan tool for it. Can I get something "cheap" off Amazon or do these rigs require something special.

Turns out this time I jumped the gun and it wasn't the regen. It was a turbo actuator. He just had to calibrate it. He said it's something that pops up when it's cold. :dunno:

Can you do that if it's in limp mode?

I don't know if you would be interested in this: https://www.harborfreight.com/heavy-duty-truck-code-reader-with-dpf-regen-59435.html

edit: may not even work for your truck

Most likely not if it's a latched code. Sometimes you get lucky but usually has to go get hooked up to.
@mrk5 I'm not sure what will give you regen ability. There's some HD code readers that will at least let you pull codes. Maybe look into the Autel ones. I don't have any experience as I've always had access to better stuff through work. I would try to go drive your truck for an hour or so on the highway once a while to keep it cleaned out. I would do it with my utility trucks once a week on the ones that did lots of in town and pto time.

I have had several trucks, (larger engine, but...) which we had to have a forced regen done with Cummins software at the dealer.
And my low dollar Matco reader doesn't always have proper corelation with codes that the Cummins software finds.

That sounds frustrating if a reader might not even give the right codes.

We turn down out of town work pretty frequently, maybe we need to take a couple of them to get some highway miles.

Or delete that garbage
Where I live we don't have to emissions but where the business is we do. I was saying we should delete that crap and register it at the house!

Although I have a feeling deleting the emissions stuff is probably easier said than done.

Yes, definitely. But the boss doesn't want to pay for the high priced reader. And definitely can't get Cummins software. Now we are ending up with Paccar engines, too.

Just happened to think if this.
I highly recommend checking for yourself to see if this application has a grid heater like the Ram pickups. There are lots of failures in those.

(If you haven't checked already. )

You need Cummins insite to do a forced regen, who did the vgt calibration. It will hold for a while but typically we had to replace the actuator after a while.

Guy I know had a deleted Volvo and it went in for auto-shift(automatic shifted manual) trans work. They flashed it and deleted the tune on accident. Fought with it for years trying to get another ecm with a delete tune. All kinds of problems.

Agree with @83ChevyK5Blazer it will need an actuator.

You should be able to get codes out of the dash as an SPN number....I have Cummins Quickserve and can look them up for you. We run a fleet of school buses almost exclusively freightliners with 6.7s, they are solid engines but like any newer diesel, emissions is troublesome. The EGR ports on the intake tend to plug up and cause all kinds of issues. Getting it out on the highway once and awhile would be good for it as I'm sure it sees its fair share of idle time (PTO).

We have Cummins insite (Maintenance Supervisor and myself) but all of our shops have these scanners which work well for everything but more indepth diagnostic tests:

Cool, thanks!
