We're looking at buying a new/used crane truck for the first time in 20 years. The truck we like the looks of the best has a Cummins 240 hp tier 4 engine. Anyone have some insight on these?

Our current truck has a Cat motor in a 99 Chevy 6500 Topkick and it has been a really good motor.

Looks to be a nice truck. The miles and hours are not too bad. I got out of working on trucks before that specific one. Only done a little bit with them in the pickups. Do you have a freightliner dealer near you? Also is there a Cummins dealer near you? Like Cummins Sales and Service. Engine work could go to any truck dealer that is a Cummins service center but freightliner specific stuff would have to go to a freightliner dealer.

I will say this, those Elliott's are good units. We sell them at work. And Luke is correct, motor work should be able to go to any Cummins dealer.

I do know we have a couple of places that are certified Cummins service places. Not sure if any are specifically Freightliner.

Our current crane truck is a 65' Skyhook and we're looking for a more hybrid type unit now. The Skyhook is old enough it has ladders on the tubes. :D

2017 year model, I'd expect 6.7 Cummins. Usually a solid engine. The less idle time the better in regards to the emissions systems

If you wind up getting it and ever need help with parts or anything let me know.

Technically the Freightliner is a 2018, it's just the crane unit is 2017.

I'm no help on the engine, but the guys we were sub contracted with had one of those and they loved it.

Transwest truck and trailer is probably the closest freightliner dealer in your area. That's the first one that came to my mind that I know of at least.

Beyond that, don't know squat about them in general.

We have a Rush Truck down the road, but I always think of them as Peterbilt? And there's a Kenworth place. I'm sure one them will work on Freightliners. Hopefully we'd never have to find out!

I used to work for Rush Truck Centers but we were their first network of International dealers they bought.

Just my experience over here, but Cummins Rocky Mountain has been less than stellar here. They aren't open as much as Transwest. I have had to watch both of them as far as what they do, how much they charge and the normal factors like when to start and how long to do a job. It's been years since I have used Cummins here, but that has been mostly due to poor management choices in the local store.
And some of the other brand dealers avoid working on the business class trucks from other manufacturers.

We did commit to buying this truck but now we're waiting. This is a trade-in for a brand new truck and the crane parts for the new unit are being delayed. Something about chrome for one of the hydraulic rams. The dealer we're buying from says they've got 9 new trucks they're waiting on. 3 of them are situations like ours where the trade-in is already spoken for so there are 3 more customers waiting. And everyone wants their truck this year so they can get Section 179 on this tax year. Luckily we're first in line.

Yup. Different shortages are all over. And then manufacturers are buried with work, too. I am trying to order 6 new dump trucks for next year. We may not be able to get any in 2022 depending on model and options. Could be late in '23 before we see even one or a pair, which would be nice. All six is probably not going to happen in one year.

I'm dragging this old thread up. We've been having issues with the regen on this truck (2018 Freightliner M2 with 6.7L Cummins). It has a switch to force a regen, but it doesn't seem to work. We pulled the switch to make sure the switch is good, and it seems to be. Anyone know if there's some trick to getting it to regen?

Does it have lights on in the dash? It shouldn't regen unless it wants to. Sometimes they require a scan tool forced regen. Or a good hard heavy load highway drive will burn them out if they do a lot of short trip driving and pto running.
