OK so if all works out, I'll be picking up a 92 Dodge 250 2wd cummins truck for daily/tow duties. Today I picked up a GM NV4500 out of a 2wd pickup cause it was CHEAP!

1) I know I'll need a different Bell housing. Will any 4bt/6bt one work? or do I need one correct for that generation truck?

2) I'm hearing different things about input shafts. Does this have to be changed from the GM one?

3) The 5th gear..... On the ground, this one works. Is there any "simple way" to check this for certain without complete disassembly? Should I be pulling it apart to update whatever it is that they do?

4) What else should I know about this trans itself and the swap?

The only thing you need to know is my address so you can come here and drop them off and go back home.:thumb:

2 things i can think of right off hand.

1. You will need a dodge input and bell for the GM one to work.

2. There are 2 different GM NV4500s. a late and early. Early ones will not work with a dodge bell because the mounting holes are in a different location. 1991-1994 is the early and occasionaly in 95. and the 1995-6 and up will work with with the dodge bell.

and the 5th gear problem on a GM unit is not as common. But to fix it. tighten the snot out of the nut and weld it to the 5th gear. I can take pictures of how we do this at work if you would like.

If you have a GM bell, I'll trade you a dodge bell. If yours is the early NV4500, I'll trade you a dodge 4500 for your gm, providing its good and mine is good. I just dropped mine off to be inspected.

Pics would e sweet! This is a 95..... How do I identify early and late?

You don't need full dissassembly to inspect the 5th gear and nut. Just pull the rear housing off. 5th gear is outside of the main housing, its in the rear housing.

So just yank the rear housing. After a 5th gear nut failure, inspecting the shaft splines for fretting is the most important thing. Too much spline wear means a new main shaft. If you do a new main shaft make sure its a fully splined mainshaft, thats proving to be a solid fix to stop the 5th gear nut from backing off. welding the nut, double nutting, aftermarket nuts are all bandaid fixes.

Stopping the torsional vibrations that cause the nut to back off is the actual fix. and a fully splined mainshaft does that.

yeah I know about the Chevy failing part ,

from what I hear they do not even sell an aftermarket shaft for them meaning a Chevy one. I would guess the new nut would work on either but haven't looked into that yet.

So why does the new shaft fix the vib part. Mine came loose after doing 70-80 mph on the freeway unloaded, which I would like to be able to do in it all the time.

We put a full splined MS a Nut nut with the lockin set screws, new gear, and weld them. And we still have customers who manage to break the welds and back the nut off.... they need to make a left hand thread nut and MS kit.... would solve it all.

by the looks, I'm pretty sure I have the Early GM :doah: But wont know for sure till I get back to my storage to have a better look. If thats's the case, I can't use it on a cummins? Or does it requre a aftermarket bell?

I suppose I could do that trade too, considering I get the truck and my Trans checks out ok.

Can't engineer out operator abuse though. Tell them to stop lugging the engine so low in higher gears.

Thats like trying to tell a bear not to sh*t in the woods.... They dont listen to anything we say. Cept when we tell the no warranty and we are holding your trans til you pay up....

:waytogo:

Ya I know that story. and if retard operators stopped breaking ****, and OEM engineers started designing stuff for longevity instead of cost savings. professional wrenches would all be out of work.

Don't forget that you'll need an adapter bell housing from advance adapters or else youll have to swap in 2nd gen dodge engine adapter, starter, bell housing, clutch, and flywheel in order for the 4500 to work with your 1st gen motor
