Ok so I have done all the research so far on doing a cummins swap in my old Chevy truck so far besides the engine these are the parts you are gonna need to use a cummins and your bulletproof sm465. So here are the part numbers I haven't gotten any of these parts yet this is just what I found we would need I am still on the search but having the part numbers makes it much easier to find the parts.

Here are part numbers to do cummins swap and using the sm465 tranny which I believe uses the same adaptor and bellhousing as the nv4500

3910516 Transmission Adapter 289.96

3906803 Flywheel Reman/Used 400.00

3913056 Flywheel New 870.34

3934080 Spacer, Starter Motor 72.43

3906804 Cover, Flywheel Housing 276.11
Reman/Used

3916101 Cover, Flywheel Housing 648.34
New
Cover Flywheel Housing=Bell housing I think.

3964432NW Starter, Denso, 12V, 268.84
13T, 2.5KW

If and when you find parts please let me know where you are finding them as it will help me and many others track these parts down

If your in MA,check out the boston craigslist for this truck!..1989 Suburban with 6BT Cummins..

posting # 3996858863....

Its in Billerica and the price is 4500 bucks....

Oh,if I was only rich!..

I have the trucks I like and want but I want to put a diesel in my big flatbed tow truck because it has a sm465 manual 4 speed and a 454 so I want to out in a turbo diesel to get better mileage but I need to find the right adaptor which I havent found yet

I also am looking for a diesel p30 manual truck at a junkyard so I can get the adaptor off it to run a cummins in my truck but I havent seen any

I've seen just two of the GM step vans with Cummins, but both had TH400's,and when I asked about them, the junkyard owner said he already had them sold...one was stripped of its body ,he said the aluminum brought him almost 2 grand by itself in scrap..in their haste to rip the body off, they broke the air intake off ,but otherwise everything else was intact..said he got 2200 for the drive train, including the huge full floating rear axle with brand new leaf springs...he got both from Fed-Ex at an auction...

There used to be a Frito-Lay place in West Bridgewater that often had some of their dekivery trucks out for sale in front of their building..they had the older step vans with the 4BT and manuals..I haven't been by that place in a long time, the lumberyard that used to be there closed up long ago,and the tractor place nearby should have closed too,the shelves there are getting practically bare!..but a few guys into Cummins bought a few of those trucks for 2500 each...

I knew a guy who towed trailers from Indiana to MA ,he was a dealer and had a 1973 or so C-30 dually he towed with, that had a 454...when the motor got tired and started smoking,he decided to swap in an Isuzu straight six diesel from a bigger box truck along with the 5 speed that was mated to it..it was a pretty simple swap, and he was very pleased with the truck, said it pulled hills much better in 5th than the 454 ever could even when new,and it got 16+ mpg too, while the 454 got maybe 8 with a load on it..

Hmmm yea I am gonna have my buddy who's dad works at the auction keep an eye open for one of those trucks I want to keep my tranny since its I. The tranny shop being sealed up and it's a mint tranny

A Cummins with a non overdrive transmission is going to be a headache. I have an NV4500 and 3.54's with what measures out to about a 34" tall tire and I'm just about perfect. Even if you're towing a lot you'll like having OD.

With that much tire do you have trouble with the 3-4 gap? My work truck is a stock vp truck with a 4500 and it struggles with the gap when towing heavy. Like I'm on the gov in third or I'm lugging fourth. It looks to have a 32ish inch tire and I believe 4:10 rear.

I agree 100%

Mine is 4.10's and 37's (probably ~36" in reality) plus only .77 overdrive, I wouldn't even consider it reasonable on the highway without OD.

My only problem is my tranny is getting worked on and is mint so I want to get my moneys worth out of it first so I thinkbi am gonna have to wait a whike to make money before I do swap unkess I can trade some stuff I have for all the parts I have jetskis, motorcycle, and 2 gokarts to sell or trade for what I need

Yeah I definitely feel the 3-4 shift but I'm used to it. I can do 35mph in 3rd at about 2k rpm and when I jump into 4th I can get it up to 40mph pretty quick and it's not lugging too bad. 4th is comfy from about 45mph and up even with my truck and trailer.
My 12 valve isn't stock though. Straight cut fuel plate and some pump tuning bumped the power a lot. I'm sure in stock form I wouldn't be so happy.

3 useable forward gears, without o/d, and an engine that only spins 3k rpm.

:doah:

...and that's only with a governor spring swap. They don't like to spin above 2400 or so stock.

The plate on the back of the cummins is for auto or manual - both are the same. Mine came from in front of a th400 in a bread truck. Am using an SM465 BH with an Nv4500 - no adapters. NP205 is mounted directly to NV4500 with no adapter.

The bell housing for the NV4500 is not the same as sm465. You can machine the SM465 BH to fit the NV4500 but make sure you get a gm nv4500 because of input shaft length. Also the BH needs to be the driver side hydraulic one to keep it away from the passenger side driveshaft.

If you use a dodge nv4500 then you will have to use the dodge BH unless you use the gm input shaft.

I put the 3200 rpm gov spring in the fuel inj pump which helped a LOT with shifting.

78 Blazer, cummins 4bt, nv4500, np205, 14bff disc brakes 4.56 detroit, d60, Michelin 11x16 tires (38.5" military armored vehicle tires)

oh, and 25 mpg hwy

Crawling can you get me that part number for the adaptor you have that came off a of in front of a th400 I am looking for that part that is all I need to do my conversion in my truck besides the engine
