curb impact! what to check? (which is now about my steel rally restore)

No reason not to fix that. Some of the wheels we fix at work are just ridiculous. Thats the nice thing about aluminum, the cast takes a weld no problemo.

As far as the crash I would pull the u bolt and check the center pins didnt bend.

I took a good look at the tire. At first glance I thought it was shot, but after a better look, I think the distortion is just the tire bulging where there's no rim to hold it. I'm going to take some of the air pressure off of it and hopefully salvage it

I could have a friend help me weld it, but I don't know how to go about getting it straightened out and into 'round'. Would you do that with a lathe? That a job for a mechanic or a machinist?

yeah, how about that - i'm in eastern suffolk, you?
I'm over in Islip. Saw a K5 similar to your avatar with a soft top a week or so ago. Pretty cool as you don't see many square bodies left.

Check around for a wheel repair shop, they specialize in this type of work.

Indeed. The welding can be done by any fabrication or welding shop that does TIG welding, but the reshaping/straightening of a wheel is a specialized business. Anybody that fixes wheels to that degree will also be able to TIG it up for you. I missed that it was bent. Its amazing what the specialized hydraulic tools can straighten out once you anneal a wheel.

I would say the tire got bruised badly enough to consider it NFG..
Be careful when you inflate it again, that bubble might pop !..radial sidewalls are pretty weak and dont like side impacts..or going over curbs at speed..

Tires are a constant source of misery for me..seems one or more is always losing air,or has cracks, etc, that make me fear it'll blow out or toss the treads on the highway..haven't had the means to buy "good" tires used or new,so I run whatever I can get cheap or free..

I wasted an entire afternoon putting a used tire on one of my trucks rims by hand, using a bead breaker and tire spoons..one tire was down to the cords and I had another one very close to the same size--a 65 series vs a 70 series 255-16..

I screwed up royally and put the first bead on the rim from the "wide" rear side of the rim--I have mounted tires since I was a teen, yet I still screw up sometimes and do that..:doah:..
..took me 2+ hours and lots of straining & cussing to get the other bead on the rim--after all that, when I inflated the tire,it had a huge bulged out soft spot in the sidewall !.JUNK!...

I was beyond pissed..at least the tire was a freebie...but I'm still sore as hell from the battle I had mounting it on the rim..it was an inch smaller overall too,so it wouldn't have been a good match to the other 3 tires,so I ended up swapping another set of 4 265/75/16 tires I had on rims already on the truck...
Those aren't all the same either, all say the same size on them,265/75/16,but two are Goodyear Wranglers with C load rating, the other two are E rated Firestone Transforce ones, and I bet they are slightly different diameter..hope it wont make the truck swap ends in slippery conditions running that combo..

'deisel4me', you sure have my sympathy, that sounds like a bleedin nightmare! But cheap bastard that I am, I'm going to give it a go and see if the tire holds up, haha. If it's a days headache for the chance of staving off the purchase of 2 tires, I'll chance it.

As for the wheel, everybody's turning me away. I get the impression that most of these places are focused on cosmetic work and, while willing to weld a crack, none too eager to TIG in a chunk that came totally off, especially on the bead line. Whether it's not worth the work at that price point, or an issue of liability, or if I just can't be effectively done, I couldn't say, but no one's even entertaining it. I'm going to give it one more shot today - got a recommendation for someone that's been in the biz for a looong time, told if he won't fix it, it's a lost cause.

I picked up 4 stock rally wheel's on craigslist at a fair price, came off a Blazer 30 somewhat years ago and have been sitting in storage since. Forgot to take a pic, but they're a less shiny version of these:

They're not as cool looking (or light!) as the M/T's, but they're pretty rad in their own right. Definitely have a cool throw back look which I appreciate. I'm going to clean them up this weekend and use them as a stop gap until I make a move on new tires. My plan is to either fix or replace the M/T by then, or move on to a 14b FF and say sayonara to my 6 lugs.

eh, I prefer the rally's personally...

Me too...aluminum rims are great for light weight, but I've had issues with some, like the crappy "uni-lug" ones....
I have chunked one on a curb when I slid into it on a slick curve, and I had one develop a crack without any impacts ,like it was brittle there ..

I prefer steel rims, especially on a truck thats used as one to carry stuff and "work"..and GM factory rally's or spoked rims are hard to beat for great looks and durability...

I have a set of 5 for my 6 lug Burb, and at least 10 of them of various widths for my '81 G-10 van with 5 on 5 lug pattern...they wont be left on either truck if I sell or scrap them either !..

I'm wishing I could score four 17 " 8 lug rims that would work on my '82 for cheap, then I could put the four 245/75/17 B.F. Goodrich TA's I have to good use..rather than try selling them..I only have the former owners "word" they were "good"...you cant tell for sure till you mount and inflate them and drive on them..

I also have four nice 205/55/16 Blizzack studded snows, but I dont think those would keep my diffs high enough off the road to prevent impacts !..might not be load rated heavy enough either..

well, if you really like the MT look, I'm sure some will turn up at some point.. they where/are a VERY popular rim...

as for rally's, I always really dug em with the steel an offset color to the chrome to break em up.. if the body color allows... in your case, maybe not so much...

I'm hoping someday to upgrade to a 17" rally. And just beauty rings no center caps. Love that look

I think what burns me with the M/T's is not just that I like the look on this truck, but that now I have three that are useless until I can line up a replacement. Even if I tried to sell them, who wants three rims?

The guy like you,who slid into a curb, that's who...:ignore:...people are always looking for single wheels for spares,or to complete their set of 3...

I'd keep an eye out on craigslist, you'll probably find one there sooner or later--or at a swap meet,etc...a new one is what,150 bucks or less ?..

I regret getting rid of several stock 8 lug steelies I had--they are getting harder to find for square bodies around here...

haha, I know, I'm sure there's some other derelict tripod out there with 3 classic II's, looking for a fourth, but finding 3 separate trucks in that predicament...

I think I saw that one listed on Craigslist today, but no mention of soft top. I'm gonna have to ask if he has it and will sell it separate...the square bodies definitely stand out here, not too many left with the salt air and sloppy winters
I've seen
a nice late 80's one in Brookhaven (for sale), and another I see at the airport now and then ...every once in a while I see something on the LIExp worthy of a honk and a thumbs up
