I thought about doing something similiar. I was gonna take a horizontal section out of the middle and weld it back together to get a narrow bumper at the corners but retain the rounded top and bottom.

You should bend the cut edges around or weld some round stock on there. Sharp edges look half ass an stitches are bad.
