Cutting the fender ???\'s

Hey, I was wondering how you cut some of the fenders off (rear, both sides) the same length because on one side I have rust all along the wheelwell, then on the other side the chrome strip is still in place, how can I cut them, so they're the same when I dont no how much rust has been there before? Measure from a point that is equal on both sides like the fender seam.

measure back to make a equal start point,cut one fender out, hold up cardboard, trace line, cut cardboard cut-out, swap sides and new draw line to follow.... just make sure you label your cardboard side to the front and dont get it backwards..

I made a template after getting the first fender trimmed, then taped it in place and marked the cut line with a sharpie marker and went nuts on it. Turned out real clean looking, but I had no rust areas to work around. /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif

I used masking tape. I taped the line I thought I wanted and stood back and looked at it. When I got it where I wanted it, I measured points like so many inches from the front of the door to the tape etc. I went to the other side and used those measurements and taped the other side. I looked at it, walked around to the other side (unless you take the fenders off and compare them side by side..small differences won't be noticed) and made sure it was fairly similar. By using the tape, I also had a line to cut along.

I used electrical tape (grinders don't like cutting it too much) As for measurements don't use the ground up approach. The tail lights, door seems, and turn signals are equal references to each side (supposed to be anyway). Like said above minor differences won't be noticed anyway.
