I just tried to install a driver's side axle in my '84 K5 from an '90 Sub 1/2 ton I parted. SURPRISE!!! The splines are a wee bit bigger on the '90! So now I need an axle from what year? Lucky I didn't need the TEEERUK, as it's my plow TEERUK, and except for some snow in the Adirondack mountains of Saranac Lake yesterday, winter should be over... Lol... It was in the high 30's last nite....

Ok, maybe I missed something, but niether one of those trucks mentioned should have had a d44 in the front.

Just as mentioned above, the '84 would of come stock with a 28-spline 10-bolt while the '90 had a 30-spline 10-bolt stock. Neither truck ever had a D44 front axle from the factory.

Huh?? I thought D44's is EXACTLY what belongs in those TEERUKS, just why the 2 extra splines in the newer one??? What was the change over year? I have an '84 1/2 ton parts pick up... But so rusty. So I'm wrong, see below post by me...

I sandblasted and painted and waited 3 weeks for the SPICER u joints!

Hmmm, so what's a D44 VS a 10 bolt??? I'm confoosed! Sorry guys!

Dana 44 front ends were used in 4WD Chevy's until '77 or so when they were phased out.

GM made their own front end for 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks after that, its called a 10 bolt. Its basically the same axle, most parts interchange between D44's and 10 bolts.

10 bolt fronts were 28 spline until '88. '89 and up used 30 spline shafts.

Mm, I wouldn't say most parts. From the spindles out -- brakes, bearings, etc -- they're identical to later Dana 44's. But inside from there is all different: gears, carrier, and as you found, axle shafts.

There's a tech article which shows how to distinguish a 10B from a D44, if you don't know the year of the donor.

I drove by a roadside bank thermometer this morning at like 10:30 & it said 104!! :haha: The low tonight is supposed to be 74. :D

Man, I LOVE the desert!!

That is all!!

top pic is a 10 bolt, bottom pic is the dana 44 out of the 77 laying upside down

why is the 44 on the floor id put it in but thats me and i have good luck with 44s though

Those "monster hubs" would be the external style. Not as strong as the physically smaller internal style.

So is the D44 really stronger than the 10 bolt? They seem so similar...

Arguably no but people seem to have more luck with them. If you ask anyone non chevy theyd say the d44 is a hell of a lot stronger than a 10b but its just not true.

Dana 44 = .00001% stronger ring
10 bolt corp = .00001% more ground clearance

I run a 44 simply because it was the first axle I found around with the right gear ratio.
