My brake pads came with these very thin sheet metal backings that are barely held on with bent over tabs. They go on the back of the pad on the piston side of the caliper. They are irritating me because they keep falling off and are yet one more thing to try and hold together while getting the caliper on. Are they required?

They help control brake squeal. Leave them off and you'll probably regret it. Bend the tabs until tight.

I just dealt with it and put it back together. It's a flimsy piece of sheet metal that covers the middle part of the pad on the back. Held on by four bent back tabs. If it stayed together, you might not even notice. Mine banged around in shipping a bit and it came loose.
