D60 kingpin service on jack stands

It's the off the truck part I'm concerned about. The axle will just rotate around sitting on jack stands.

You're gonna have to get creative about holding it, that's all..

Just off hand, I think I'd try laying a 2x8 on one end of the axle, and drive your car up onto it. I dunno - maybe easier said than done but its an idea.

Or - I've seen pics of guys that strap them down to a tree to hold it still.

OH.. And you might want to have a look at this post -- http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=286143&highlight=kingpin+removal&page=2

I got my VERY stubborn KP removed by using the technique Pumpkinator used. My axle was just sitting on the shop floor, no hold downs or anything. One of the photos shows a tool I made out of nuts and a large bolt. Just welded them together and then you have something to stick the socket onto.

I chained mine to my work bench.

I did break two 1/2 breaker bars and then finally ordered a 3/4 5 foot bar and socket.

you guys make these out to be a major p.i.t.a

if out of the truck lay it on the floor and work with the range of motion to make its self stay on the floor .

if in the truck be sure truck wont rock off stands and go for it .

when thay pop loose there will be a bang and free spin so don't bust your knuckles.

if your going to do a lot of them like I have done over the years get these 3/4 drive tools . t-wrench is 200-600 ft-lb . all but the 3ft handle for ratchet off ebay .

Well...... I did pretty much try this first but without drilling and then pouring the water through after heat I don't think mine ever would have popped.

But I hear ya - it isn't like this needs to be some major overly complicated operation!

Sounds like I'm babying my axle. I have it on stands, not just flopping around on the floor. I plan to carefully compare the new kingpin to the old and see if replacement is warranted.

Heheh... You got that big ole beefy D60 and now you're afraid to beat on 'er! ..Just kidding, having a little fun with you that's all.

But seriously, when I did mine, it wasn't long before mine fell right off the stands and crashed onto my foot :eek1: when I was reefing on it trying to get them pins loose... Talk about feelin like an ijiot!

Don't be afraid to let it bang around a bit!

Well, like anything, the more you do something the better you become at it.

Fortunately mine was in my truck when I did it but Grainger sells the 7/8 allen wrench and its actually really inexpensive. I bought that and put a 6 foot cheater on it and it came out without much effort considering what it is. Just my .02 on what to use without getting crazy. If you laid the axle sideways with the kingpin horizontal and put a couple of 4x4's or something under the knuckle would that hold it in place while you wrench some effort into pulling towards the ground? :dunno:

Well, the kinpin on the other side is pitted, so I'm going to figure this out. It looks like people have had success taking a cutoff wheel around the base to relieve the pressure. I'm going to try that if they don't come off easy with a little heat.

Do you guys recommend using loctite when putting in the new kingpin? If so, which color/kind?

I just did the cutoff wheel way. Worked good! I used anti seize. No lock tight for me.

Amazingly, I found the giant hex key at Ace hardware. Did the grinder trick and put a jack handle over the hex key and got it to pop. I wouldn't say it just worked, but put the grinder to it a few times to get closer and closer to the C, and put more and more muscle into it and it eventually came. Hopefully the other side will be as easy. :thumb:

Other side was not so easy. I ground it, heated it, hit it with an impact gun, etc. and it wouldn't budge. Finally, I got the big hex key going at a 45 degree angle behind the axle, put a 3 foot pipe on it, and then attached a come-along between the pipe and the other side of the axle. Cranked it down until it was scary and hit the C right next to the kingpin with a BFH. It popped. :eek1:
