to do it "right" you need to pull it all the way down so you can install a new crush sleeve...id mark the nut and theads on pinion and go a HAIR past where it was before. I might worry a little more in a rear axle, but im a little more abusive on fronts.

so then i need to get a new crush sleeve, pinion seal, pinion nut right? is there any links available that would walk me through it? sorry for being a noob....

entire axle for a d60. to get pinion out, carrier has to come out, to get carrier out, shafts have to come out, to get that out, knuckles out have to be torn down so its just knuckles left...

ahh gotcha.. damn i need too do mine... i think i'll wait till the next bearing repack...:D

You DO NOT need to pull the whole axle apart, Chevy D60's use shims instead of crush sleeves :D

Simply unscrew the pinion nut, pull the yoke out and replace the seal.

Reassembly is the opposite, pinion nut torque is 250 ft. lbs.

Yeah your thinking 14bolts that the pinion seals goes on from the inside. Dana 60 is the same as the 44.

Nut off,
washer out,
yoke off,
pry old seal,
clean up,
be liberal with rtv around the housing,
put new seal in,
put yoke on,
be liberal with rtv on yoke between yoke and washer,
retorque nut.

Took me 15mins.

NO crush sleeve in the D 60.

Easy way -
Mark Nut position on pinion
Take off nut with impact
R&R seal
Put nut back on with impact to same location
Drink adult beverage
Done.

I would really suggest not marking the nut and reusing it, I've seen several diffs fail from pinion nuts that came loose because they were reused.

Always use a new pinion nut, they're not meant to be reused (and a couple dollar nut can save your expensive diff).

does anyone have the part numbers of any suppliers for those parts? pinion nut, pinion seal?

That makes some sense. I have never seen one fail, but I know that doesn't mean it won't. The nut is a mechanical locking nut. I ran mine for a few months before re-gearing.

But I would replace the nut if I were you. It is cheap insurance...
