i can get a d70 delivered for like 350 maybe 400 depending on shipping. what would the negatives of it be? i know parts cost a little more, but i really want ARB and 14FF dont have it so looking into d70, i'll do a search, but if you know about them please reply and give me an idea aobut them /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

very comprable to a 14B. will allow for a ARB, which will solve your locker problem.

perches and shock mounts will have to be totally re worked. AFAIK, there isn't a D70 that is a bolt in for a chevy. Also, IIRC, there are neck-down versions of the axles. ask the guy to pull the axles, snap pics, pop the cover and take pics.

thanks zakk, i asked him, but i have no idea what to look for, but the people here can help me there. but i think a d70 is the way to go for me i like the fact that i can get ARB in there and dont mind the price diffrence, if all looks fine from the pics, i think i'll make it a go and buy it

For starters there are a few different spline counts on the axles. I believe there is a 16,23,32, and 35, the best being the 35 spline. I think that most late model ford axles had the 32 but don't hold me to that. Make sure you know for sure what it is out of before buying parts as there where many different carrier styles with different ring and pinion offsets. The number on the axle will give you that info. And as previously stated the perches and shock mounts will need to be moved. Other than that its a great axle that is just as strong as a 14 bolt with different gear options and selectable lockers available. And yes you can stiil put disc brakes on and the 1350 and 1410 yokes are available for it just like the 14 bolt. Hopes this helps a little. Its just the small amount I learned building mine. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

thanks Brent, i totally neglected the spline differences.

IMHO, if it's not the 35 spline, move on. the 16 & 23 are not as strong and much older. there was something that made the 32's not as desirable (pinion, i want to say) but the 35's are good to go.

*edit*

if someone knows for sure on the splines please let me know. i am going off memoery here!

I think that the late model Dodges used the 32 spline 70's. The wierd part of the pinion is that some late model Dana 70's use a collapsable spacer ( crush sleeve ) for pinion bearing preload instead of the shims.
I agree with the if it aint 35 spline than pass on it !
There are a few different versions of the 70's so becareful. The most desireable are the "B" series and the H.D. versions. Stay away from the "U" series and the 70-3 versions. Good luck ! Tom

I am working with my HD70 now. The only BIG difference is that you will want to cut it down. The overall length from WMS TO WMS on mine is 73". Hit my webpage to look at some of the stuff about it. John Sweet has been a god send with info. about this thing.

thanks guys, heres the small info about it:

Dana 70 from 79 ford 1 ton. 35 spline HD 3.73 complete

and he said for the price:

$250 plus shipping

probably about 300 lbs.

that's about $100 for shipping via forward air.

so i am really thinking bout getting this

If possible get him to remove the drums. I dont kow about that 300lb. thing. Mine weighed a hell of a lot more than any 14FF I ever had to move.

In the latest issue of Four Wheeler, there is actually a ARB locker listed for the 14 bolt in the drivetrain warehouse's ad. So I gues that they are actually producing one now.

you will want to cut it down

[/ QUOTE ] That's the width I'm looking for. Want to trade for an M1008 rear?

Sounds like you found what you where looking for. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif If your going to go disc brakes you might as well have him pull those heavy drums to save on shipping.

If its a Chevrolet rear its probably out of a dually dually rears are gonna look goofy because there to wide for a k5(or pu)body
