Dabba's First Floor Resto... (Ugh, trying again, Need input! 10/21/12....)

Hmm thanks for the heads up on the mount. Hopefully i can be carefull with it. I don't even think i have a vice.. I'm sure i can come up with something with a hammer, the metal aint that thick..

Dabba lucky ryoken is talking you through it. That guy can fab stuff with a screwdriver and a bowl of jello.

I had a thought on your tin bending. A couple of 2x4's screwed to a piece of plywood with a gap for the tin can act as a vise. You can also get tin bending vice grips for a fair good price.

I remember what it was like in my twentys rebuilding cars and building the tool box also. Look for local auctions in your area that feature tools, I have purchased two vise's and an anvil for the price of one vise. Great for sockets and wrenchs to. Especially the ones you can beat on. Gotta love rusty old cars.

Ahh yeah, good advice. Im sure i have some stuff around i can use to jury rig it. and yeah, if it werent for Ryoken I'd be bumping my head around in the dark haha

I am an electrician so I have paid attention to jobsite fab over the years. Have had to think out side the box a few times. Plus looking around in other guys toolboxes. With there permission of course. My wife also manages an auction company so it can be a good little back pocket secret. I have bought snap on tools for the price of craftsman tools.

I picked up a 73 this summer and will work on it over the winter. it is also in need of floors so I will be watching, please keep posting. anyway you can post the pics like ryoken did?

Ah yeah sure, just gimmie a bit to upload somewhere.

Sorry had to reboot the smart phone. You guys east of the Dakota's really battle the salt lick roads. Have couple of friends that moved out here from the ny and had trouble selling the rigs because of rust.
My rust is only at seams and by the threshold and rockers. The rig I bought can out of Idaho and sat in a pasture for the last 15 years. Only real problem is a frozen tork converter. Got newer running gear coming anyway so problem solved.

Pass side is fine, it wasnt even road salt. Rusted out from the inside out.. Its only bare paint and metal, no carpet so the paint got torn up and of course the metal rusted, never took care of it and bam, hole

The underside was still painted heh

So.. I'm probably going to cut the floor and patch now, but the weld through primer doesnt come in until thursday/friday. So i won't be welding until saturday.. Think thats okay?

Edit: And those overcuts i made with the grinder, can i just fill those with slag and grind em even?

Thanks ryoken for proving my comment. It will be a beautiful hood ornament for your rig.

Dabba you'll want to weld the overcut part with a bead not slag depending on the width of your over cut. And yes then grind flat. What type of welder are you using?

Do you plan to ryno line your interior or back to carpet cause you may want to hit it with rust bullet or some such other stuff prior to save all your efforts in the future.

My plans are to look at lizard skin for heat and sound. Have not seen any post on here about it yet. Can't seem to finish reading ryoken's novel yet to look elsewhere. I am captivated I must see how it ends. Hehehe.

Started cutting today

I'm using a Mig welder, Today was just a bitch getting the floor out because some of it was tac welded onto supports so i had to cut at them. I cut into some of the supports which i re-welded so you might so those.. I basically ended the day taking measurements on my hole and figuing how im going to cut my peice...

This picture is showing the curve of the hump from the side. I'm going to have to fab/bend the metal myself somehow as i dont have preformed metal for it..

And I have SEM Weldthru primer coming thurs, only stuff i could order, but then i went to another shop and found this, picked it up, think its good?

Thanks guys for the help!

Looking like progress. Leave the hole and yabba Dabba do it. Sorry couldn't resist.

Are you using flux core wire. It looks like you got some slag. Not bad just more work. Most important thing is make the edges as clean as possible. When I weld seams I like to prep with a grinder flap wheel and it will help post weld to grind down and make flat. Use like a 80 grit and finish with a 120 or 150. Like 10 bucks each and get at a welding supply store.

Just remember push your weld not pull, keep the tip clean and stay consistent with your speed. Saves a lot of after work.

Thanks for the tip man, yeah i meant to leave a lot of slag, i had some space so i wanted to try more to fill it in. Was fixing from of my cuts. That peice in the center was under the floor and taced to it, as well as along the supports, what a bitch to pull up, hopefully the new floor fits right to it, hopefully afte Im done i could tac it back to the supports.

With flux core thats wrong. You gotta pull not push, I truly talked to my welding teacher at college last week or so about mig tips. If you got regular wire it doesnt matter, but with flux you pull for a better weld, just like how you pull when stick welding, because of the flux. The guys only got 30+ years in the welding scene so ill trust his advice:thumb:
