Dabomb's 1985 Jimmy - Rust Repair/Floor Replacement/Upgrades: TPI Swap

This one is old but the only one I have of the "finished" install. Taken during one of the initial test drives with hood still off. Felt like being Adam for a little bit lol.

This weekend I will be pulling the transmission with a buddy of mine. Hopefully goes smooth with an extra pair of hands. Not my first time pulling it so I know what to expect.

While it is out I might look at replacing some of the exhaust system and adding the heated o2 sensor so I can actually tune this thing with the EBL Flash Ecm. It runs just fine with the stock L98 tune being forced in open loop. But it can always get better. Plus some extra rich start up issues are present that shouldn't be.

Guess another update is in order. Truck has been back together since November. Put some new mufflers on it a few weeks ago. Truck drives fantastic now! Doesn't gas me out anymore and sounds 10x better. Currently looking into replacing the sending unit due to a failed fuel level sender. Once I do that I will be working on the steering and getting it tightened up. Still looking for an xj shaft to upgrade my sloppy stock steering shaft. I also want to lay down some bedliner on the floor. It is still sporting the Ryoken green for now.

Sorry to ask but I'm curious how you ended up getting that membrane of the front seat floor boards when you were doing your rust repairs? I have some holes and some other surface rust and I am gonna have to peel that mess up to check further underneath it and not have it catch on fire when I start sparking stuff off. I was thinking of just soaking it with some Acetone and then letting it sit and air dry to see if it breaks down the adhesive. Not sure how well that will work though. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Well, I apologize for never responding. I must not of ever got a notification on this. For you or anyone else that might come across this with a similar question...For the front "membrane" or rubber coating that was on the factory floor I just used a wire wheel and or flap disc on my angle grinder. Messy but got the job done.

I am still around and so is the old Jimmy. Not really done much to it since last updating on here although I did fix the fuel sending unit finally. Installed a new one and the gas gauge works now. I used it the past two summers the most I have since 2012 hauling jet skis and boats around. It has held up well all things considered...I have been beyond happy with the upgrade to the TPI System.

It ended up blowing the heater core this summer however. Bypassed it and let it be. I ended up trading a four wheeler for a 2001 GMC Yukon 4x4 with the 5.3L late in the summer so it became the new toy hauler. Benefit to being a gear head is flipping things and then trading for better toys. Anyways the Jimmy has sat since then. I did however purchase from a neighbor some 33x12.50s with plenty of life left. My old super swampers are on their last bit of tread. Had them for going on almost 10 years I think.

In other news,I have some job prospects I am working on to get me out of where I am at now. Not happy doing what I am doing (back working in the office as a draftsman...I need something that gets me outside and using my hands and technical skills.... Hopefully one of the two jobs I am pursuing turns into something. I'm confident one will. Been a bit busy with other things going on to really work much on either the truck or Trans Am.

Past two years I have been buying and flipping jetskis, four wheelers and boats for some side cash. Has worked out great so far and plan to continue it as a small side hustle. Using this winter to stock up on cheap skis that need some repairs. Hoping this next year allows me some spare time and extra money to revisit both the Jimmy and Trans Am. I am living in my own place now and my work space at home has shrunk considerably. Planning some potential building projects to help with that for down the line.
