Dad's 'Mad, The no longer hibernating 1957 Nomad.

It’s a runner.

Been busy with it. But that’s from the first time it’s moved under its own power in 25 years. It was a low speed ride around the neighborhood feeling out the brakes. I think the RF drum needs adjusted as it pulls left under braking. Hoses and wheel cylinders were clean and dry.

There is a local cruise coming up Saturday that I’ve been planning on bringing the car to. I’ll clean it up after work this week and be ready Saturday.

Kinda surreal to drive the car. I never got to drive it when i was younger. The last time it came out dad and mom drove it to Frisco in the mountains for the nomad club convention in ‘99.

The 327 is spunky. The hurst shifter is awesome. Trans clicks into each gear. It felt prety good to have it out.

Good luck with the show Saturday!
when I got my Vette back on thr road after 20 years, my brakes were pulling (drums) and I although they were dry, I changed the shoes and problem gone.

I’m betting there’s some rust on the drum and the shoes aren’t grabbing very well over there.

But seeing how I snapped a wheel stud off that side I’ve got to take it apart again anyway. I’ve never had anything with shank style mag lug nuts and apparently 105 ft/lbs was too much. It broke with my torque wrench. So I think I’ll get five more lugs and get rid of the goofy lock on the wheels. Plus one stud. While I’m there I’ll tweak the shoe adjustment.

We probably should give Rob lower torque specs. Cuz we gotta factor in for "Big Dude" !!!
He probably did the 105 lbs/ft one handed!
Gentle Giants can move some stuff!!

Yeah ask @shima how easy in snap bolts and easy outs with my bare hands. We both just laughed as it didn’t look like I was putting any serious torque into an exhaust manifold stud.

Until the car came to my garage I never had to work on either ‘57 very much as a kid. So despite my level of experience on cars in general I’ve got a lot of ‘57 specific stuff to learn. Either ‘57 was in good drivable condition when I was a kid. The most I did was when the fuel tank in the 2dr let a bunch of sediment into the system requiring dad and I flush the tank, install a inline filter at the tank, new fuel pump and change the filter at the carbs. I was tool gopher and light holder. I wouldn’t have trusted me at that age to work on at that time either.

I’m hoping to run into one guy from the mile high nomad club that’s still alive at the cruise. I’ll probably need his experience sooner or later. He’s a good guy. Dad and I ran into him at the same cruise a couple years ago. It was the last time he would have seen him. Dad and him got along well. So I’m sure he will be pleased to see the car out of the garage after all these years.

My sis wants to bring the other ‘57 and her hubby will bring his 51 Chevy truck. I’ll have my little container of dad’s ashes in the Nomad too. Robbie will be coming and get his first ride in it. It’s going to be bittersweet at some point but overall happy because the cars are out. They can be seen and appreciated by all. And we start making our own memories with them. It’s going to be a good time.

The Nomad got its first bath in a long time. I planned on doing it at the home but my hose doesn’t reach all the way to the driveway in front of the garage. So I went to the local car wash and used low pressure and my own bucket and sponge to wash it. And just as soon as I finish drying it off the rain came.

I patiently waited out the rain. Talked for a while to the owner of the car wash. He’s got a ‘52 Hudson. Got the first “cool car” comment from a couple walking in front of the wash.

Once it dried out a l planned on going to Ft. Logan to visit my folks gravesite. It just felt like the right thing to do. It was bittersweet. But I think he would have appreciated the gesture.

I decided to head over to my sisters place and show her the car. She was happy to see it. And smell it too. She remembered the smell as clearly as I did. Took them for a ride. Came back and let her drive it. She did good.

We had a good time.

The car is working better the more I drive it. I figured out the brake pull. It was pretty apparent it didn’t want to drive out of the garage. Jacked up the front wheels and both spun freely. Right rear good. Left rear bad. Like locked up. Found it! I pulled the wheel and had to wiggle the drum off. The adjustment on the shoes was too tight. Backed off the adjustment. Drum slid on and off nicely. Put it back together and it worked much better. The more I drove it the better it ran and stopped.

How it runs though is great. The 327 pulls very well. The 1-2 and 2-3 pulls are fun. It does so with authority.

Ended up having to drive home in the dark. All the lights work.

Inside tomorrow.

Cruise went well. Car ran flawlessly. I got the inside vacuumed out and glass wiped down before the kid came over. We went and got some ethanol free go go juice for the tank and grabbed lunch at quedoba. The kid bought too! Shocked!

Grabbed some waters for the show and got to the cruise early. 2nd one there to be exact. Used the cones we had for the nomad to save spots for sisters ‘57 and the BIL’s ‘51. My nephew brought his 450hp Audi to the mix too.

It’s interesting to note that due to way the garage was packed we never got both 57’s out at the same time. Today was the first time in my lifetime both cars were together OUTSIDE of the packed garage. That by itself was a good day. We got to hang out and saw a bunch of cool cars. Even @Capt Ron brought his chopped and channeled ‘53 out for the fun.

I did end up running into the guy from the club. We spoke briefly but I’ll go over and see him one on one another day.

People started pulling out for the actual cruise so we piled in with Robbie, my nephew
Martin and his girlfriend Maddy. We did a few laps. It was Martins first time in the Nomad too as he’s only seen it stuck in the garage. He’s becoming a pretty solid tech in

his own right and really connected with the car. He and I talked a while and mentioned how he’s progressed on his career and how grandpa and him had connected with him over the car stuff. He’s definitely a late model guy but he was fascinated with the Nomad. Asked if he could help when I need to work on it. Robbie wants to help too.

The car itself just ran better the more it got driven. I got to run it up to a little higher speed too. The 327 just pulls solid through 1st to 3rd. It pins you in the seat well. Sounds good doing it despite the use of glass packs. The brakes got better too.
