damn i hate Cali smog laws

yeppers.... even the pre 73 vehicles are required to have all factory smog equipment installed.... (sure mr offisir... its all there)

anyway

you are correct about SMOG patrol...
there was a pilot program that traveled around California with civilians and smog sniffer trailers... they were on the freeway ramps for a couple of months...including one here in redding... they had a chippie assigned as a pullover/chase car
the program died in the face of budget cuts but those trailers are sitting somewhere....

and yes it applied to all motor vehicles,,, so say you were driving your 73 k5 502 blower bb nitrous twin turbocharged quad headered breathing dragon... and you went by the sniffer and it said... you smell....
well
you get stopped .... a civilain,,, basically a CARB smog tech goes over your truck while chippie prepares the cite,,,
pow...off to the referree... which of course you cant pass... then because you modified it there isnt any limit to fix... and BOOOM
your back to the inline six

They were going to try the camera/trailer/mail you a smog ticket for a inspection approach but I heard the feeling was that the trailers would get trashed.... now where did they get that idea...

and that my friends is why I hate Kalifornia.....

I wish I could kick myself for writing so many smog tickets for beautiful rides... I think I was just jealous... now oily smokers... thats another story..
I think smog is a racket anyway

What department were you with (or still with)? What sort of training did you have to know all of the smog equipment that shold be on every vehicle, or did you guys just go for the obvious .... blower through the hood, Nissan with a GM engine, that sort of stuff.

thats y it looks like i'm welding and drilling my headers for the AIR... i don't know why i didn't think of that before...

That won't work! All aftermarket parts have to have a CARB number to be legal. Don't take it in for a smog test until you get this figured out. Once you fail, for any of the reasons you have mentioned, you will be in deep sh!t. Either you are ignoring the clues I have given you or you can’t see past your own nose. If you don’t get it, email me at [email protected] and I’ll explain.

why im with you about our smog laws

I'm not a big fan of our smog laws either, thats why I havent driven my truck in six months I can't get it to pass:mad: Its all stock:mad:

no i heard you just not sure if a PO box is an address... my dad got fired from his job workin on f18's in the navy because alll he had was a PO box and no address.... somthing about terrorism saftey crap.

I will have to do some research on that.

lmfao.......

K5monsterchev: I can't PM so ill do it here....

the truck is an 88 that came with a smog pump/AIR,pcv, egr, and cat. The only thing im gonna run into to problems with is the AIR... the rest i can run without a problem. I know edelbrock makes the headers but they are 400$ and i would also have to come up with another y pipe and i don't have that kind of money.

I'm hoping he will just look to see if the smog pump is there and say its ok... even though that will probably never happen. I could even drill a few holes and weld some bungs in the headers for the air and have custom AIR flowtech afterburners and y pipe. The problem is this is gonna take some serious $$$ out of my prominator/labtop fund. I'm pretty sure if i don't have a prominator on it its worless to try to get it to pass smog. May be the opposite tho... i don't know.

Basically if i can pass the visual im almost positive that with some prominator leaning, and some techron valve cleaner it will pass.

Email me then. Im not about to hook you up with an illegal smog right here on the forums, the BAR might be undercover on here.

EDIT:I just saw it says I dont want emails, hmm, how do I change that? IM me then, whatever.

Cali SMOG LAWS CLICKY

So taken of this page , and I quote :

A federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified (federal or 49-state) engine cannot be used in a vehicle that was originally certified for California.

Make sure the engine and emission control configuration on exhaust - controlled vehicles are certified to the year of the vehicle or newer, and to the same or a more stringent new vehicle certification standard.

If a computer-controlled engine is installed in a non-computerized vehicle, the "CHECK ENGINE" light, the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) diagnostic link, and all sensors, switches, and wiring harnesses needed to make the system fully functional must also be installed.

The installed engine and host chassis must retain all of their original emission control equipment. Diesel-to-gasoline conversions must have all gasoline engine and chassis emission control systems installed (such as fillpipe restrictor, catalytic converter and evaporative emission system).
--------------------------------------------------------------------
So basically I get from this CALIFORNIA website that you should run the complete TBI engine and everything else from a California truck newer than yours to be legal .

So if a California TBI truck has no A.I.R system , you don't need it , if it does you do .

As far as the DMV is concerned, a P.O. box works. I live in a mountain community is SoCal and we dont get the pleasure of having the Postal delivery monkey drop mail off at our residence. We have to use a P.O box. My P.O. box address is on my DL. Registration goes to P.O. box.

Is your area subject to biannual smog inspections?

LASD (Sergeant/25 years,,,, and Im retired now )

Smog abatement training

it was a joke.... 15 minute with a AAA mechanic and a chippie that came to auto theft class
We looked at a "good" and bad" example.... late model caprice (good) and a gen 2 2wd chevy truck (bad)which had been reconstructed with different vins and parts (a stolen that the auto theft guys got to drive,,, 454 BB hotrod truck built by mexican drug dealers to outrun INS at the borders)//// It wasnt smog anything much less legal...
1 hour on grey market vehicles (non US vehicles being imported into the US,,, many are stolen)... few meet US smog regs and so never get reg'd properly... and shops charge 5-10 grand... yep... to convert them....

The vehicle code is so BLUNT and BROAD in scope that any mods not CARB approved, correctly stickered... even the CARB sticker has to have specific info in a certain configuration, are subject to citation and in some cases immediate impoundment...

It didnt take any rocket scientist to figure it out....

We all are pretty clear here in Cali what we can and cant do....

Once again asking a tech to "do a smog" for you puts their butt on the line... its a CRIME FOR THEM and their house payment and freedom.... is that worth it???? and its getting harder and harder... it seems so chickensheet and such a small deal until the handcuffs get slapped on a tech and they realize...opps somebody is going to make an example out of ME
yes they can still use another vehicle
yes they can still play games on the test
yes they can do all the other tricks... but those are getting fewer and fewer

And yes if someone is giving you cheating smog tech info THAT IS NOT FOR A OPEN PUBLIC FORUM.... and I am guilty myself here

Unless you've already gone the full hotrod route my philosophy is that a person with todays tech and CARB approved options can get a good performing vehicle that will still get through the smog nazis...

Anything else probably isnt worth the hassle and problems

This is my city... I carry a badge...I was a smog nazi.. I have since repented

PS ... you could reg in a non smog cali county like trinity or humbolt or siskiyou.... but even those places will get it eventually... and you still wont be legal.... but once you have a dirty test gross polluter they wont let you reg in those counties until the truck meets specs

hmmm.... I live 30 min away from siskyou.... you sure siskyou is one of those counties?

Even if they end up making it a smog county it will buy me time until i can get the edelbrocks... also i could get a po box in Oregon where my dad is. Have to change my plates and get an OG license tho...

do i have to take another test to go from cali liscense to Oregon?

I will probably end up with edelbrock air headers and a whole new exhaust but i didn't have the money at the time or now and bought a 200 dollar header/y pipe sytem.

K5monsterchev....

email me if you got the time...

Im not the one who was gonna do the smog, yeah, im a tech, but I knwo people who will, BUT only specific things. NO WAY would it get clean piped, just, well, ive said too much already.
