Dana 60 & 14 Bolt Carrier Replacement Help/Ideas Needed

I have truetrac's and the have six bolts on each side and only a 2" circular opening on the case. They are 10 bolts and have the opening because of C clips. I doubt that a 14 bolt has that opening, not sure a 60 would need the hole as it is front axle and no C clips.

Only reason I recognized it is I'm gathering parts in a cart to do gears in my burb soon lol. It does look different than most all the other ones.

As for a case spreader, any one with normal mechanical sense should be able to use one without doing harm. They help get the proper preload on the bearings. If you can slide it in by hand when your done you didn't add enough shim really.

Your only spreading it a couple thousandths of an inch.

Just use the new races, only have to make setup bearings, not races too.
Some places sell setup bearings. May be worth it. It took me about 2 hours of constant reaming with a sand paper flapper bit in a drill to get mine right.
PITA.
I made my own case spreader. I can take pics of it if your interested in making your own.
Only used a couple pieces of flat stock, 4 pipe nipples and some all thread.

The 14b is simple. Total walk in the park compared to the 60 in my opinion.

A lot of guys ditch the crush sleeve on the 60 pinion and go with a spacer/shim kit (crush sleeve eliminator).

Others may have done it with success, but I heard and read from many places DONT USE AN IMPACT TO PUT THE PINION NUT ON.
they say it can ruin the new bearings with the vibrations.
Would LOVE to see your homemade spreader along with part measurements and photos..

I am doing the crush sleeve eliminator!!

I don’t use spreaders, I work them out with prybars and I tap them in with a deadblow hammer….some people don’t know when to stop at a couple thousandths

Yes if you use the case spreader, .015" is max movement to spread case.
I use an inch pd bender bar torque wrench to set pinion pre load. Get 1 with 3/8 drive, if you can, less adapters for the big sockets.
Set up bearing are great make set up much easier.
Sound to me that these gear set ups are not factory. Since the ring gear is shimmed the ratio is wrong for the carrier split and they didn't use the wide set.
Since you are replacing carriers, you can match carrier split with your preferred ratio.
Don't forget to change the axle seals in the Dana. I use some all thread, nuts and big flat washers to install the new seals.
Yea, have no idea what was going on with the original carrier...

I bought the seal installation tool for the axle Seals... Can't wait to see if it works as well as they say.

Still looking for a good video showing how to set preload.

from what i can see in the pic of the box thats not a true trac ...... thats a std ol posi style unit with clutches to wear out .

a true trac uses helical cut gears and no clutches . so unless you miss spoke or ordered wrong you got wrong parts .
It is TrueTrac. Got them for front and back. They both have helical gears

I have tried to look over the postings in this forum for information regarding rebuilding Axles. I have a Dana 60 and 14 Bolt. I am replacing each axle width Eaton TrueTrac differentials. Any shortcuts, do's and don'ts, shortcuts or horror stories are welcome.

I do not have a case spreader for the Dana 60 so I'm looking for ideas, other than the obvious rubber mallet method, for getting the proper shim adjustments. I will be making set up bearings and set up races. I've watched all the YouTube videos I could find.

I'm sure some of the people on this board have methods that make this job much easier than it would normally be.

Suggestions on how to secure the differential when torquing the ring gear bolts??

Suggestions on setting the Dana 60 preload?

FYI. If your rock climbing or in the snow, the true track has some stumbling blocks. You have traction on both untill one starts spinning, then you have to tap the break to see if the one spinning will engage again.

I will possibly have some snow usage... Minimal rock crawling... Or none.

No measurements yet, (at work), but heres some pics I found of what I came up with.
Pic of it in use shows that I had to slightly change my plan when using it in truck. But with the axle out it shouldn't be a problem.

Ahhh, you use the cover bolt holes instead of the two holes on either side.

Yeah, it worked slick. First version would have been ok on the bench.
Spring and plate became an issue in the truck lol.
Doing it with the all thread makes it minutely adjustable too. All I did was get it snug and then like a half turn or so on each nut and it was good.
So the all threads could be shorter than I made em for sure.

There is the rub "normal mechanical sense" :D

Guarantee you will be disappointed. I had one, and took it out after the first run. I had a air locker in front and the Trutrack in back, and now I have air in both. And very happy. Guaranteed locked up.
