Dana 60 brake upgrade.

On my straight axled 2500hd i have a ford dana 60 with chevy outers. I would like to upgrade the brakes to something a little better, i could only find these two setups. any ideas on any of this..? Both of these the outside of the hub needs to be machined so the rotor sits flat since they are slip on style.

1 Of the choices i seen are swap my outers to fords and run the wfo brake kit. With this kit i can make my rotors slip on and also use stock 2500hd calipers and rotors. The rotors seem tho about the same size but the calipers are dual piston. They sell nice bolt on abs sensor mounts for the ford spindles. The brakes would now be all stock and work like they use too. This will be a few bucks to do since the ford kuckles are weak and i'll need to buy reid knuckles, plus all the outer parts even use are over 500 a side. This could cost 1500. plus which is crazy but the whole idea is nice/

2 Is the torq axle kit, slip on rotors but uses dodge 2500 14 inch rotors and their big dual piston calipers. I just question how these caliper will work with my hydroboost brakes. I could do this swap i figured for around 700.00. They sell just the brackets for 195.00 and i can get the rest cheaper.

Someone else makes a big brake kit using Dodge parts like the Torq kit. I thought it was Cut Bros but I don't see it on their Facebook page., iirc the Torq kit was cheaper.
 
The Torq kit looks like the way to go. Your hydroboost should work fine with the dodge calipers I bet. I am seriously going to look into that Ford Dana 60 upgrade for my 1990 F350 someday. The brakes on it suck.
 
I'll prob go that route, just need to have the hubs machined on the od past the lug nuts to 7.800 and it's bolt on. It's cheaper too using the torq brackets. My brakes don't suck, I think they could be alot better tho.
 
Now that i look at it if I do the wfo kit it's not giving me much more besides dual piston calipers. The torq kit has 1 inch larger rotors at 14 inches and dual piston calipers. In theory it should stop better. I need to find out tho about the master cylinder, to see if the hydro boost hd system will work ok. I'd imagine it will, I'm going to call em when I get a chance and see what they have to say.
 
What about wheels? Seems like I read that the Dodge brake conversion requires 17" wheels, not sure though.
 
Yea on the torq site a 17 is the smallest that will fit. Which is fine I have 18s and 20s. The hydro boost Chevy from 00 and up works good with these calipers.
 
So thru a few calls and some searching the brackets are 225. shipped from torq and are in stock. The best deal on calipers, rotors, mounting and pads is power stop from rock auto. That came to 250 with an 80.00 core and its still cheaper than anywhere i've seen....unless you buy lower end parts. The bolts from mopar to bolt the calipers to the new mounts are 5.00 each and i need 4. Next to last piece is re-welding the abs mounts onto the new brackets, these cost about 20.00. So I'm going to be in this brake swap about 600.00 which isn't too shabby for this deal.

Last is i'll need to have the hubs machined so the dodge rotors fit over them, it depends on the casting which could be between .100 and .125 or about 1/8 inch. I could do these by hand or get another set of hubs and have mine cut....not sure on this piece at the moment. I can't have too much down time at the moment.
 
If it doesn't have to be perfect for the rotors I'd just spin the hub and "machine" it yourself with a grinder. Do the rotors center on the studs or the center of the hub?
 
I'm pretty sure they center on the 9/16 studs. I'll prob do em by hand, can't see it being all that bad.
 
Theoretically, any where the turns rotors should be able to turn down the hub.

Whether or not they will, or have somebody on the brake lathe that isn't retarded, well :dunno:
 
That's exactly what I thought of, I called a buddy of mine and he said it shouldnt be a problem at all. I'm ordering the brackets today and waiting to see if I can get new abs sensor mounts or just cut off the old ones. Since I have these rings on my wheel hubs and the mounts welded on my current caliper brackets.

I think there were a couple guys using the Torq kit over on 67-72chevytrucks. They were happy with the kit and it looked pretty sweet all put together, super beefy too. I don't remember if they ever got their rigs on the road to post any reviews of the stopping performance or not though...

I hadn't seen that WFO kit before but now I'm considering it for the Snowfighter axle I'm getting ready to swap under my K5. I'm using an AAM 14 bolt and like the idea of having a matching brake setup. Plus the slip on rotors will make future maintenance way easier. I'll only be running 35's so I don't think I'd need the Reid knuckles either... Sorry for rambling lol.

The wfo is a nice kit, if I had ford 60 outers I'd of bought it for sure. The torq kit looks pretty good, hope to be doing it real soon. I seen the banjo bolt on the dodge calipers is 10mm, just need to find out what the 60 chevy calipers I have now is. From what i read it's 10mm also.

and yes if you find a place that turns drums and rotors you could turn the hubs your self with the studs removed .

I have many years under my belt running a ammco brake lath . if they were in front of me I would cut them down no problem .

Both the Chevy and dodge both use 9/16 wheel studs, their isnt much slop in that area either. They are hub centric too but not a snug fit, really close tho.


I have to pull em apart anyway to put new studs in em. So I figured I'd pull it apart, he can cut em and I'll put em back together the next day. A buddy of mine is a gm master tech at a local Chevy dealer, he said no problem.

Also ordered the abs mounts for the new sensors, 25.00 plus shipping. I'll get new wheel studs too, was looking for 14mm but can't find any with a knurl large enough so it's staying 9/16. The bolts the dealer has in stock.

Are the 60 banjo bolts 10mm..?
 
There was a split in the years I believe.

*I think* up to 78 was a 7/16', 79 on was a 10mm.
 
The 09 3500 is what is used and are 9/16, I should of said that I guess. I did see the same 78-79 7/16 and after that 10mm for the banjo bolt. I should be good with that. I ordered the set of brackets this am, ordered new abs wires and the abs mounting blocks will be here soon too. As soon as the brackets come i'll order the brake package i spoke about from rock auto.... I bit myself too soon saying about rock auto too....i'll get the rotors and pads from summit being free shipping and the calipers local since of the core charge. This will be drilled and slotted rotors with ceramic pads, its a power stop package. The rotors have a zinc coating so they don't really rust like others do.
