do you guys use the stub shaft dust shield? To me it seems un-necessary..

OK. There is the actual seal between the hub & the spindle. I guess I just figured the seal did the majority of the job & the stub dust shield ran the risk of holding debris up against the seal. I’ll put them on & move on. Thanks!
 
This pic is of an inner axle, the OP's dust shield is on the outer. I don't see any way to install that later model seal on the outer axle.

These seals will go on the outer axle and replace the dust shield. They have a metal inner sleeve that presses on the flange that the dust shield pressed on to. The outer rubber lip folds and compresses like an accordion and seals on the machined surface on the back of the spindle.

Any benefits of this over the older flange?

Its a second seal in that area vs a metal dust shield that just keeps debris out. I pack the area with grease to help keep water away from the spindle seal.
