Hello All

Im new to the forum with a 90 GMC Jimmy 4x4
I have read a lot and used the search engine.

My goals for this are 37's and LS swap.
I have read that the 3/4 ton axle swap is a direct swap being that it comes from a 73-87 square body.
I have a Dana 60 from my 72 C20.

Pros and Cons from using this Dana 60 in the rear.
Or just better off with a 14 bolt FF

Any help would be appreciated

My local rear end shop told me i could use the stock setup and just upgrade axles and differential with gears 4.56 and be fine with 37's roughly 5k for front and rear.
How does that sound?

Dana 60 rears are kind of a quirky monster
I’d advise to stay with the 14bff rear. They can commonly be found with a 4.56. The stock shafts hold up for most people

Thank you. Since i already have the Dana 60 was just inquiring.
I found a couple local 14 bolt FF
 
They’re just fine for driving around town. If you want to beat on it or upgrade it is when you want to think twice

Take it slow and easy shopping for a 14bff. Typically they can be had for not that much

There are differences in the brakes. The factory open carrier is desirable as a Detroit will go inside of it
 
I understand using what you already have, but i would recommend going with a 14B as @Bent77 suggested.
I may be wrong, but I believe that the rear D60 has axle splines which are more coarse, (fewer) than the 14B which makes them wear more. And the fact that the 14 was built for so many years with a higher production quantity means that there are more out there and more parts available.
 
Welcome to the forum! I see you’re also in the Bay Area. If you haven’t landed on the shop, the Rear End Shop in Livermore has done a few vehicles for me at this point. The owner is a 4x4 guy and very knowledgeable. Prices and service are great too.

What are you planning on doing with the truck? Pavement or rocks?
 
A bunch of us are running the AAM 10.5 in our rigs. Its still a 14 bolt but the newer version with disc brakes from the factory and you can use the ebrake too. Came in early 2000's 6.0L work trucks and many others. They are also cheap and easy to find. It is not a direct bolt in, needs spring pads moved. Slightly wider, which I like, it lines up the front and rear tires better. A regular 14 bolt with drums will work great in your truck, but depending on your plans its worth doing a little research about the AAM 10.5.

Yes the shop I spoke with is the rear end shop in Livermore.

Very knowledgeable. He took some time to break things down.

Pretty much just going to be pavement.
He said rebuilding what I have should be fine. Around $5k and good to go for 35-37s.

Wheels and tires are first on the list.
Then suspension. Debating a 2-4 inch lift
Drivetrain front and rear axles for 35-37s with a future LS swap. Erod. Smog legal swap

I have been searching and searching. I just found one. Out of a 2003 2500 HD gas truck.

What’s a good price for one?
 
I paid $250 for mine and then put $1000 into it. Detroit locker, new brakes, etc. The core shouldn't cost a ton, they made lots of them. You should try and get one with the gear ratio you want to run. 4.10 is easy to find, not sure about 4.56.
 
I think I paid $250 for my aam 10.5 with 4:10 gears, cut off the perches and old shock mounts and welded on new ones. Then tossed in the detroit locker from my 14ff.

The lugs are metric on the aam rear end.

With 37's 4 inches of lift will clear with some trimming for on road.

how does that sound?

I also notice there are some that say 9.5

I think i will go AAM 14 bolt
Guy wants $300 may be able to talk him down a bit.

For street use? Whatever you have in it or whatever is available for a reasonable price. The aam will be 8 lug, and pattern depending on the year

Something to match the 8 lug rear. Any particular years to look for?
