Dana 70 gears in a Dana 60 front axle

Here is the Dana 60 and Dana 70 parts side by side.

Dana 60 ring gear is 9.75" dia
Dana 70 ring gear is 10.25" dia.
The Dana 70 pinion has larger teeth and a different radius where the inner bearing shoulder is.

I had to grind a little on the inside of the housing for the 10.25" diameter ring gear to clear.

Now the 35 spline shafts are the weak link :haha:

If anyone is interested in the Jana 76 upgrade, Carl is the guy to talk to at Jantz4x4 1-360-639-6203.

Nice work! Is that stronger than D60 gears? What was the reasoning behind that! Looks good!!!

The Dana 70 gears are about 33% stronger and you keep the ground clearance of the smaller Dana 60 housing.

I've been watching his thread on Pirate since it start, way cool stuff. If I hurt my 60 gears I'll definitely be stepping up to 70 parts.

I saw this installed in Crawl magazine. I was wondering about doing this myself. I've already got D70 gears.......D70HD :doah:

Easy install then?

Been looking at these since they came out. Looks pretty normal and easy just a plain flat out good idea for those running bigger than 44s.

LOVE this. im a huge fan of parts compatibility on a rig. If i could have identical front and rear driveshafts id be all over it.

I think ill definatly be looking at doing this when i regear my axles to 4.88 and drop lockers in em. thanks for the thread. btw, any more pics of that sick rig?? that thing is mean lookin.

this is an awesome upgrade... 60 front with 70 gears and a 70 both stuffed with 7.17 gears would be a tough set of axles to break with a stupid low crawl ratio... Thanks for the link Corey that's some cool sh!t...

I cracked all the teeth on my front ring gear and found that http://jantzengineering.com/ sells a Jana 76 kit to make the Dana 70 carrier and bigger gears fit in the Dana 60 housing.

Are these the parts you recieved?

Which bearings are you swapping?

What is the large spacer for on the botom left?

I have been thinking about this swap for a couple months now,,, I dunno if I am gonna do it or not. I am really worried about the thin carrier bearing I believe he is using on one side to move the carrier over. I am thinking that could be a weak link.

Did you build jack bolts into the cover like Carl suggested?

I had a Dana 70 HD rear axle I stole the ring and pinion out of for my front end. All low pinion Dana 70 gears are the same. The different load ratings come from different size bearings, housing castings and axle tube diameters.

Easy install then?

Yes, if you are confident doing gear installs, this is just a couple extra hours.

Hopefully there is some video from last weekend coming.

I see you run 4.56's

any limit on the ratios that will fit the case ????? :dunno:

Call or E-mail Carl, he knows all the specifics on what ratios will work with what carriers.

That is the standard kit. I reused my Dana 60 carrier bearings and outer pinion bearing. A modified inner pinion bearing comes in the kit. The large spacer is the modified inner pinion bearing race. The modified carrier bearing race does not have alot of material removed from it. A fabricated diff cover with preload bolts in on my list of parts to buy, it seems like a never ending list.
:haha:

I read those & he never gets real specific about the actual beefiness of his replacement parts. He just said they are tough enough. If he got specific I missed it anyhow. Thanks for the links though. I have read the pirate thread twice.

Thanks for the reply.

Currently the ring & pinion is gone in my K5. I have been considering this mod, but am still on the fence. I would like to see & hear some real world beating to see how the trick bearings hold up, before I jump on it. I know Carl claims he has been running it in his rig for quite some time, but I consider his opinion bias.
