Just to pile on yet another opinion

I personally like the D 70 for the aforementioned lower possible gear ratios. I’m running a 14b w/ 5.13s and 38.5s now, but I would love to run 6.12s w/ the 42s I plan on running next year.

A couple big pluses for the 14b that wasn’t mentioned, though, is its easy gear set up and super cheaper price on a Detroit locker. Gear set-up on a 14b f/f is a piece of cake, even for a novice mechanic. And, on those w/ an open carrier, Detroit lockers can be had for $350-400 :D … that saves you around $250 if you plan on running a Detroit (A Detroit for a D70 costs $600+ :eek1: ).

Just a few other things for you to consider… :wink1:

I'm happy to see 70 parts are easier to get than i thought. just picked up 70 front and rear w/488s for project. thenks for good tech

a 14ff is hands down the cheapest, best option for a 1-ton conversion. the strength difference is so minute its not even a consideration. only a deep gear might make the choice difference to go 70 over a 14. the cost alone makes it worth doing a 14 over a 70 though if a deep gear is not a necessity. and now they have a arb for the 14 too. its a no brainer, 14ff PERIOD.
