Dana 70

My 70 the best I can tell came from a 73-74 D or W300.There is no BOM on it so I cant be sure and I dont remember the width.

My one word of advise when Dana 70 shopping, before you buy anything pull a shaft. If its not 1.5 35 spline, you dont want it.Most Ford E250s and 350s I have seen in yards have had Dana 61s so ya gotta be careful when looking at those.

:D

Hi there, i' ve just recently fitted a dana 70u in my 91 suburban. it came from a 98 dodge 3/4 ton with cummins. the spring spacing is 1 inch wider between spring perch centres and the shock mounts need work as they seem to be opposite handed like my 84 K30. i fitted the axle by taking all the rear spring hangers off the frame and making 1/2 inch plate spacers to increase the spring spacing to match the stock dodge dana 70 perches, then just new U bolts and different top plates. i'll get the wms measured tonight and post it tomorrow, all i can remember right now is that it is wider than the standard 85 chevy dana 60 by about 2 1/2 inches.

I know that the later model Dodges had D70 rear ends, but I didn't know they used the Dana 70-U model. Pretty sure the later model Dodge truck use 32 spline axles that aren't as beefy as the older D70's.

The 98 dodge D70 i have has the small 32 spline shafts, i'm hoping to upgrade to the 35 spline when i buy a locker for it. i measured it up last night and it's 69 3/4 inch from wms to wms.

I have a D70HD that came out of an early 90's SRW drive oneton Chevy Crewcab with a 454 (IFS). Its sitting in my garage right now. I've got a 5.86 gearset for it I may use someday.

Tomseviltwin, You had better make sure that is actually a 70HD, and not a 70U3. Tha 70U3 was put under the 88 to about 93 K3500 GM trucks, and is the bastard 70 rear with the 31/32 pinion offset. 65" WMS, and not easy to change gears over what was available from the factory. I've got one with 3.73 open, thought it was a great find till I did some research, now the first sucker....er...guy with a couple hundred bucks in his pocket is going to own it. Hope this helps.

Good wealth of info, guys, but oplease keep it coming.....I have tried to go looking for a GOOD SRW Dana 70 for the last week and keep getting caught up in this damn wedding of mine.....he he.......

So how do you tell the 70U3 from other rearends, outside of the WMS to WMS measurement?

Thanks again guys!

just remember that you want 35 spline and most are 30 spline and that is garbage

No, you must be thinking of D60 rears. I do not know of any 30 spline D70 rear ends. Most D70's are 35 spline. The only other spline counts on D70's that I am aware of are old Kaiser application 23 spline, and Dodge's goofy later model 32 spline units.

Was there a point to that statement or were you just talking?

Anyways,

I would like to start compiling a list of everyone's D70's.

I know BillVista started one, but who knows when he will get back to it!

Just post here or PM me and let me know what you have and I am going to try to get some info from DANA as well!

I called DANA's "tech department" and inquired about a manual/bulletin on Dana dimenions and the guys says, GET THIS, if you give me the BOM I can tell you any dimension you want.

Now mind you, I had specifically asked about the WMS to WMS dimension.

What is wrong with his answer?

WELLLLL, if I could get the BOM off of an axle, couldn't I measure that dimension? Here's you sign, dumbass!

Anyways.......

Is the DANA 70 B, just a dually axle, ot r did it come in SRW?

"B" series D70's came in DRW & SRW versions.

There's nothing wrong with his answer, you've got to understand that there are TONS of D70 variations out there. Not only differences between the brands they are used in but also in the specific applications within the brand (not to mention the none automotive equipment they were used in).

Yours is not a black & white question, you will have to either take a tape measure with you when you look at the axle or get the BOM's.

It has 70 HD 3 molded into the webbing. Is this the same as yours?
