I have and have had some Dana 70 gears/power lok's and their is always some confusion as to what style 70 gears will work in what style housing.By style I mean 70D,70HD,70U,70B.How can I tell a HD from the rest when it don't have HD on the housing??

Somebody clear the air for me,and does anybody make a disc brake kit for a Dw 70 rear???

The HDs have alot of extra ribs and bracing around the housing. 70s are big anyways, but the HD look enormous. I believe all DRW 70s are HDs....GM anyway...

Any dually pickup 73-87(91) will have a 70HD, I think it's possible (although unlikely) to get them in C&C's but I'm not sure. All GM version HD's I've seen have 4" axle tubes and also have HD cast in the diff webbing. There is thick webbing going from tube to tube towards the rear off the pumpkin but nothing extra on the nose like a later GM 14 bolt.

DIY4x has a new kit for these axles, look for a fresh post in the vendor forum.

Ditto what John said. These GM versions are HUGE!!! 4" tubes as mentioned and loooooooong WMS to WMS. Even the internals are big. Check out the bearings inside once you pop the cover off. They make a 14FF look like a 10 bolt.

I have ran into a batch of ambulance 70's and they are priced right so I have been picking them up.They are all mid 80's model Ford E-350's and most have Powr-loks in them.

I have tried to check the BOM #'s on the tubes but the Dana site is worthless,or I'm not smart enuf to use it one.Probably the latter.:doah:

ttt anyone have any info on disc brake kits for the drw 70s that are still using stock dually wheels? I know kert makes a kit but it wont work with dual wheels. My tow rig (77 c-30) is going to need brakes soon and I would like to convert the rear to discs

*edit: nevermind, it appears kert now has a kit that will work with 16" dually wheels
