<<NEW UPDATE<<
Called Dana (thanks stoopalini for the #) and it is a '69. damn. BUT, two wierd things....it doesn't have a manufaturer name on it, like it was built for GM or the "F" guys or whoever and this axle was original with drums. Someone's been playing with my axle!!! o'well, guess i'll see what happens next weekend when i try and put her under the K. Thanks for all your help eveyone.

>>UPDATE<<

I sand blasted the D44 and pulled the cover and here's what i found...

On the ring gear:
9 26 69 DANA 18520 A3D2 45-11

Scribed on the ring gear:
i 739

On the axle tube (long side, front), 3 sets of stamped #'s:
11 10 9CF

603036 9

11 10 9A8

Can any of you guys decifer what year this 44 is?
Thanks - Jersey

>>ORIGINAL POST BELOW<<

I'm tearing down the Dana44 i just got to put all new bearings, seals, brakes..blah, blah in it before i replace my front 10b with it and unfortunatley, i found one of the spindles was wooped. Will the spindle off of my 10b fit, be the same, as the spindle on the 44? I put thatk30guy's name in the subject because he wrote an extensive post about the dana44's about 5 months ago, which has helped me A LOT, and figured with his knowledge on the 44, he may have the quick, correct answer. BTW - Thanks for that post. So here's what i've got:

my 10b - '91 6lug
D44 - '79 8lug

Thanks in advance.

Re: Dana44 Spindle? thatk30guy...you around?

yes those will work just fine.... If you had the older Dana44 setup like I do, then they would not work with your 10 bolt.

From the knuckles out all the parts interchange between the Dana 44 and the 10 bolt...

Re: Dana44 Spindle? thatk30guy...you around?

When I was building my D44, I used one spindle from the D44 and one from the factory 10 bolt. They were identicle in appearence and size, so I didn't worry about it.

It's been like this for about 4 months or so, and it rides fine.

Thomas.

Re: Dana44 Spindle? thatk30guy...you around?

what is "the older Dana44"? The guy i bought this from told me it was from a '79 but i'm not 100% positive it is. Is there a way i can find out exactly what year it is? You guys are awesome...where else do you get 3 replies in under 10 minutes???

thanks guys.

Re: Dana44 Spindle? thatk30guy...you around?

The 'older' D44 has large external hubs and smaller axle u-joints. These were pre 75 or so I think. your 79 should be compatible with the 10 bolt outers you have.

Re: Dana44 Spindle? thatk30guy...you around?

The older 44 had a different inner bearing size. Best thing to do is compare the two and see if it'll work. Or if you don't want to take you ten bolt apart till the 44 is ready, you can always go to the parts store with your 44 spindle and ask them for a bearing for your 10 and see if it fits.

Re: Dana44 Spindle? thatk30guy...you around?

The smaller u-joints were pre-73. And my original front had spicer internal hubs that are the same size as the ones on my 76 HD.

Re: Dana44 Spindle? thatk30guy...you around?

Well, everybody answered your questions!

You will have no trouble using the other spindle.

The "older D44" which GM refers to as the "first design" is all the vehicles from '76 and older.

"Second design" trucks are '77 and newer. So, you will have no trouble at all using the spindle.

Re: Dana44 Spindle? thatk30guy...you around?

The only real way to determine what you have is to get the BOM numbers off the long side tube. Those are the Bill Of Materials numbers, which are stamped on the top part of the long tube.

A simple phone call to any drivetrain shop, especially like 4 Wheel Parts Wholesalers, Randy's Ring & Pinion, or even ORD can tell you what you have, the year, and the truck.

The long tube part, where are the BOM, on top or facing foward ?

Re: Dana44 Spindle? thatk30guy...you around?

If the gears haven't been swapped there should be a date stamped on the edge of the ring gear too...but you'll have to pull the cover off to see it of course.

Re: Dana44 Spindle? thatk30guy...you around?

Thanks to all. I will check for the #'s tonight, both on the long tube and R&P and repost tomorrow. If all is the same, I guess the calipers will also work....? Mine are in much better shape then the ol' D44's. Thanks again.

Re: Dana44 Spindle? thatk30guy...you around?

Stirring the pot again huh executioner? The calipers for the 10 bolt and Dana 44 are the same...1/2 and 3/4 ton versions of each are identical too.

Re: Dana44 Spindle? thatk30guy...you around?

The calipers are the same.

When I swapped in the D44, I did not even remove my calipers. I just unbolted them from the plate and left the line hooked up so I didn't have to bleed them when I was done.

They fit fine, but still needed to be ground down for the 15" wheels.

Thomas.
