early to around 1980 was the change over point . newer style swap in no problems if need be .

and you prob have necked down inner shafts also from the early vintage . there a bit weaker over the newer versions . but if no crazy use there fine or trail spares . and if you want later / newer just swap in no mods .

Speak to me oh one with info ~ what is this neck down you speak of? I am
Picks

The neck down is on the inner shaft. About 3”-5” in from the yoke the shaft steps down to around 1.3” until about 3”-5” before the inner seal area where it steps back up to 1.5”.

Nothing directly to do with the bearings, it’s just features of the earlier axles.

So? Wheel Bearing nuts 6pt vs. 4pt... anyone know the diff or why or when>?

BTW ~ My WB are toast! Too much rust from years un-used...

Id get new spindle bearings and seals while your there...

OK I'm having a shit time finding wheel bearing & seal replacements... Google is shit ... what is the modern web site to get Timkin Bearings and National Seals? Online?

i JUST did front rotors on my 60 front . its now under truck #4 with the same bearings and races . and last time apart was almost 20 years ago . its done plow truck / mud truck / daily driver / and more duty . i just cleaned out the dead grease and checked the parts and all they needed was a re-pack with fresh wheel bearing grease and seals.

take this info and roll with it . and i live in the north east RUST belt of hell !
