Dare I say it...Another 72 K5 build! The Bubba build - getting back into it

I'm sure glad that those DS are at your house instead of mine, finally. :D What a PITA that turned out to be, huh. Doesn't look like they even compare to the originals. They look huge. :eek1:

Really dig the old school wheel, looks like it belongs on a Chris Craft.

So, if I go back in this thread, you said that this thing would be running in about three weeks. I think that were knocking on that door bud. I wanna see pics of this thing cruzin' the beach. :woot:

Great work, Sean.

That steering wheel is pimp :D

I like the paint job too. I haven't posted on your build much, but I've definitely been following it. Looking forward to seeing it get back together

Great work, Sean.

Dude, even though it took a while, I still can't thank you enough. Saved me a few hundred $$$ The new shafts are immense to say the least. I actually had trouble taking the front out of the box with one hand:haha:

As for the three week estimate... Well like usual I've been running into issue after issue. My buddy was out here visiting for two weeks, and although he helped me on the truck, much of the time he was here we spent tooling around the island and getting our drink on. I have no idea how much alcohol was consumed, but it was plenty:whistle: He helped me wet sand/buff, but of course that took longer than anticipated, especially because the first buffing job left a dull, streaky finish. Turns out it was the polish I had gotten (Maguires deep cut something or other). Apparently the rustoleum didn't like it very well. So after re-washing I got some other polish and used a foam sponge buff wheel and it shined up great. So that cost me an extra day right there. Then my windshield is still not in. Every time I try to accomplish something it takes 2-3 times longer than anticipated. And finally, the mandatory shot to the nuts... after opening the d-shafts and checking them all out and being excited, I realized the front t-case flange isn't here. So now I need to call Jess at HAD and have him send one to me. I know I ordered it and believe I paid for it, but I hope he doesn't give me problems about the time frame from when I ordered them until now...

I still have a pile of parts that need put on. The rear bumper needs mounts welded on. Rear shocks need mounted. Seats need put in. I need to adjust the holes in the trans tunnel because of the engine being moved forward, then paint it. I need to paint the glove box door black still. Exhaust needs cobbled together (I plan to redo it after we move, don't worry). I should be able to go Monday or Tuesday to put the rear pinion together and swap tires/rims out.

Otherwise she's done. Emblems/lenses are on. Grill is together, just needs hung on there. I still need to make a bracket for the soft top on the windshield frame. I'm NOT going to be drilling a bunch of holes into my pretty new one. But I am going to get it driving before I worry about the soft top, rock sliders or anti-wrap bar. Those can be done after the fact. So if all goes well and my parts show up I'm genuinely hoping for 1-2 weeks. My wife is off this weekend, so no truck time until Monday, but then I can throw myself back into it. We'll see how it pans out. Although when I first started I said I wanted it to be done by New Years... a couple weeks off isn't so bad on my first big project like this I don't think.

Oh yeah, thanks for the kind words guys. I've wanted that wheel since I bought the truck! My dad got it for me for Christmas:woot: The Radiator fit great, and the wiring was easy for the fans. Then again I suppose it should for the amount it cost:eek1:

So I gave Jess at HAD a call this AM about the MIA front output flange. Apparently it was lost in translation that I wanted a flange front and rear (even though on the website it says you need his flange to run the cv front). Oh well, he cut me a deal on it and shipping is *only* $22. What's another $100 thrown at this pig right?

Got a few little things done today. Hoses on, glove box in, glove box door painted, brakes gravity bled (except pesky LF), grille on and a few other odds and ends.

I still haven't heard from safelite about my windshield...

I threw my old rear output on the front so if I get it running before my flange shows up I can put fluid in it/drive it. Tomorrow it's time to bust out the welder again and get to work on the exhaust and the torque mount for the t-case. If it goes well I may be able to start on the anti-wrap bar too.

As for the brakes, my pedal will drop around 1" and then is rock hard. Does the engine have to be running to bleed hydroboost brakes, or is my mc bad? I'll be replacing the lf caliper, so the mc wouldn't suprise me too.

Here's a pic... I swear I'll take the real camera out there sometime and get some real pics...

Thanks dude. The landlord was just trying to avoid conflict with the neighbors. I got the body back on the frame and in the garage and stopped working past 5 and on Sundays to avoid too much heat. I originally told them that I would get it driveable and quit, but as I moved forward more and more got done...oppsies:haha: it's not going to get "finished" while we're here, but it'll be most of the way. I'll need to do the rear floor, cage, new motor and the efi later on but it'll be driveable and looking 1000 times better than it did.

It looks great! So what happened with your landlord? Is he still beating down your door or did I miss an earlier explanation?
I was wondering that myself.

glad you were able to placate him and get a lot more done that you thought you would.

Well I've been hitting it pretty hard this week. As usual things are taking longer than anticipated, but the list is shrinking pretty fast.

Instead of posting a description of what I've done I'll let the pics do the talking, and make a list of what still needs crossed off.

Change engine oil, fill/bleed clutch hydraulics, replace LF caliper and bleed brakes (hopefully the MC is good), fill radiator, put in seats, put in new throttle cable, install new FUSH kit, put on actual rims/tires, mount front bumper, make new mounts for rear bumper, cut new holes in trans tunnel.

Of that, I expect to get all of it except the last 3 done tomorrow (hopefully), plus fire it up for the first time in almost a year and a half:woot:

My t-case front output flange still isn't here, nor is my windshield:doah:

Ok, here are the pics. Oh yeah, I forgot to take a pic of it but I also made a new torque mount for the t-case. I'll snap a pic of it tomorrow.

I've gotten a lot of smaller stuff done over the week too that isn't picture worthy...

Well I forgot to take a pic of the torque mount:doah: Oh well, you guys will live. Once again, didn't quite get as much done as planned/hoped buuuuuuuut....................

I did do this:

I couldn't get the cooling system buttoned up. The radiator kept burping, so I think I may have a bad (or too warm) thermostat. I'll go get another one tomorrow and see what I can't come up with. It never got warm enough to turn the fans on, so I'm still not positive if they're wired up right or not.

Found that I have an electrical gremlin in the dash somewhere. I think it's just a ground problem, but I have no dash lights and my temp gauge isn't working. I'll have to figure that out as well. My fuel gauge is reading, but it's weird...it has 4 gallons in it, so it should be just under 1/4 but it's reading way over past full:dunno: Everything else is working great though, and the motor fired right up. She's a little smokey at first but she'll do:whistle:

I didn't get the seats in, nor the wheels mounted on it. Everything else that I hoped to get done is done or almost... Got a new caliper on the LF, and the brakes feel good now. I just need a helper to pump a few times to finish that up.

I can't seem to wipe the chit-eating grin off my face:D:D:D

BTW, the glasspacks are a wee bit noisy!:saweet: Sounds badass!!!

What did you ever do with those 6 lug turbine wheels you started with??:dunno:

they're sitting in the yard next to the house at the moment. Interested? I think shipping may suck, but we'll be back to the mainland in June...
