Dealer License - Safety Minimums?

Bump for the mid day crowd.

No one has a dealers license that can help me out?

DMV and AAA have been worthless so far...

That is what I meant, dealers know they can get away with a lot unless you are buying a certified vehicle.:dunno:

Well, have some dealer friends digging up the documentation on safety minimums as we speak.

Local GMC dealer did an inspection on the truck, metal to metal on front and rear. Rotors under spec, drums under spec. $1300 repair.

Going to make sure i have my all my ducks in a row before i give him a call. Will keep y'all updated.

Well except for the brakes and tires it seems like a pretty decent truck! Does it drive alot nicer then the 91? How does it cruise on the highway compared to the 91? Its too bad about the p rated tires cause i do like the look of them! Have you thought about swapping the tires from the 91 onto the 99?

here in ny state the dealers are required to pass a vehicle inspection at time of sale just the same as joe blow off the streets car would.

but ............................. most get lick n stick passed on the used car lots from small dealers. i know 1 shop here in town he wont do squat to them unless he has to after the sale . and most of them need a gravy list of repairs as he buys the crap at the auction no one wants. :doah:

Not sure if this even helps or not but back when I lived in western New York we had a used car dealer set up across the street from our shop. We would do NYSI for these cars all the time until we finally got fed up enough and refused to do them.

Laws vary from state to state but with the NYSI you only had certain issues that would fail a car. Back then the whole durango balljoint issue was going on and when he would bring one in and the balljoints were pretty much falling out we would still have to pass the damn vehicle because it was not part of the inspection.

Now this is going back alot of years and things I'm sure have changed since then but we finally made some phone calls and found out that the techs actually did have the ability to fail vehicles based on their judgement for issues not on the list but there was the possibility it could be fought in court. So we started to refuse the inspections.

So the lesson is that no government inspection is going to be reliable. Its the government for christ's sake. You physically need to get under the vehicle and inspect it yourself. Dealers are there to sell you crap and to make the highest margins possible, and if that means they can leave the metal to metal brakes on the vehicle and sell it they will.

Other that the brakes and under rated tires, it's pretty nice. I'm Very picky, so it need some detail attention, but not too bad. Power locks all stick, fuel pressure leak down and slow start, a/c needs a recharge, etc...

Overall though, it drives well, front end is tight, Trans shifts good, etc. we'll see how he wants to resolve these issues.

The way I see it, he has 3 options:

1. Pay to fix the brakes, possibly the tires based on law verbage.

2. Take the car back, where it sits, an offer a refund. I eat my travel costs, he picks it up where it sits

3. He does nothing. I take the issue up with DMV/dot over his license, and start the eBay dispute process.

We'll see how it shakes out. Will probably call him tmr.

nysi is still ball joints falling out / flinstone floor boards / no muffler / and no bumpers you get sticker basicly.

but the killer is 1 light bulb out you FAIL :haha:

and cops get to give out tickets if thay get off there butts and enforce the bumpers missing and mufflers to loud when thay want.

good luck on the fight with the dealer.

and yes as a licensed nysi inspector i dont give them a sticker if its NOT safe for 1 year of driving in my opinion. i have refused a few in my day. i need to sleep at night. :D

$1300!? WOW I got About $400-500 in parts at the most that includes 2 new rotors in the front, front pads, rear shoes and 2 new drums. You dont have a brake masters near you huh? I think the closest one to you is in Tracy. I found they are the most reasonably priced shop to take your truck for service in the brake/suspension realm. Plus they use good parts, like Moog, federal mogul etc. I just did 4 new ball joints, track bar, tie rod ends and and alignment on my F250 for $600 out the door with parts. Not to mention all of it came with a warranty. Me personally I would just do the brakes myself but I understand you already paid once for the truck it should be okay when you get it. I don't think the dealer is going to do $1300 and trying to make him do it is going to be a uphill battle.

Yes, the quote is on the high side. It was from a dealer. And yes, if it comes down to it, i'll do it myself.

But, as far as i'm concerned....i do all my own work and trust no one. If i HAD to pick someone i trust, guess its the dealer.....

The last thing i want to do is have to take it back over a crappy job...

I am sorry, but I also don't trust anyone, and I certainly do NOT trust a dealer.
I trust one thing a dealer will do, is charge an arm and a leg, but never was I satisfied with any dealer work.
they always threw parts at the issue and most of the time didn't solve the problem.
I only trust a handfull of professionals that do have pride in their work, and they own their shop.
But for now I am the only one that works on my cars and trucks, and that includes my Big rig that as we speak is being fixedby my neighbor and I.
He is just a good helping hand, very dedicated and anal.

Agreed. The dealer was just the most convenient, reputable place to get a quote if this is going to turn into a legal battle.

He lost his right to try and get it done cheap when he did not address the brake issue when he swapped tires and sold it w/o a real safety inspection.

Ok.

Here's another good example of me growing up, and being a lot more reasonable. I know what the guy owes me, but i also know what a hassle it will be to get most of what i feel is owed to me. So i compromised.

Tires - He said he took it to his Firestone tire guy, and said put the same size tire back on. They put the P rated tires on. I told him i'd be surprised if they would do that, and to ask the question . My thinking is that if they made a mistake, they may let me return them to a local firestone for at least a credit on their value. Then i can get tires that don't suck for cheaper.

Brakes - After some convincing, he is willing to pay a REASONABLE amount to have the brakes repaired. I was cooperative and moved the truck down to a "local" shop to have another estimate put together.

We'll see where we end up....

very good comp on the deal you need to happen. that sounds like a good middle ground for both sides.

and as to firestone screw up . thay should cover this for him as its a legal safty thing most chain stores dont like to go under rated on suv tires these days after the f/s - ford problem.

if need be have him send tyou a copy or the invoce and go to the local dealer to you and talk to the manager of the f/s.

but if thay dont wana deal craigslist is hot on tires of this size to move fast these days.

Really been surprised in how much tire prices have gone up on craigslist over the last few years. I probably bought/sold 10 sets in college, mostly 6 lug, but still.

We'll see how it goes. REALLY surprised that it was a firestone dealer that put under rated tires on the truck.

Local shop wanted to do it for even more, as he thinks the calipers are overextended and corroded, etc....

Dealer agreed to cover transport to his shop, and cost to have it done at his shop. In the interest of time, i asked for a check for that value....and i can put that towards getting it done right, local, quickly.

Yes, not ideal....but a fair enough compromise w/o going down the legal path...

Firestone manager is going to look at the truck, and consider crediting me something for those tires so i can put proper rated tires on it. If only i had a set of rims i liked better, to swap at the same time....

Need to find a set of the 2000+ alcoa's, and i could step up to 285 BFG's with a D or e rating....

Ask and you shall receive. Picking up a set of Alcoa's and a nice bedliner tonight...hope it all fits in my BMW :haha:

it looks like a nice truck.i could do all that work myself with new calipers, hoses pads rotors and probly ball joints and steering components for under 600 bucks.that is crazy prices.i dont live in cali anymore but have part prices gone up that bad out there that it is that expensive plus shop fees.wow.i have thought about moving back to cali but if thats the case maybe not.lol.it sounds like he is going to help take care of what is excesssively worn though which the biggest concern was.:waytogo:
