Decisions decisions. 4l80e or 4l65e?

Help me decide which direction I want to go.

I have a 2wd 4l80e that I got with my 6.0. I have the adapter to mate to my 241(mechanical speedo), and I also lucked out and have the long splines output shaft. Mileage is a bit of a mystery so a rebuild is most likely going to be needed ($1400). The good thing about the 2wd is the speedo is located on the trans, I won't have to fool around with any VSS stuff.

BUT

I have to change the 241 input to 32 spline and move my crossmember. And now I'm just thinking about size, weight and parasitic loss associated with the 80.

OR

I can buy a "new" rebuilt 4l65e for $1750 (heavy duty) or $2500 (extreme duty) and includes a trans cooler and a Hayden cooking pan. Bolts right to my transfer case, no moving of the crossmember, but I have to go through trying to find VSS.
dude the vss on the 2wd trans would be in tale shaft housing if you change it you loss it

I can guarantee that is not in the tale shaft housing. 2wd 4l80 has two speed sensors in the main housing. To convert to 4wd all you have to do is have the right length and splined output shaft for your TC, and the right TC adapter.

yep 4L80-e only 2wd and no speedo sensor problems . as both input/output sensors are in main trans case as said .

but some early run 4L80-e trans in 4wd had the tone ring on the drum in the rear position . you have to look in the hole after you remove the plug . if its got theeth your good to go . if smooth then no tone ring .
