is it o.k. to only hook up the heater vacuum hose and the egr to the vacuum pump by themselves? that's the only way i can get defrost.

For the heater that should be fine for winter time since you are just bypassing a bad switch.
I don't know what the EGR would do with direct vacuum though, did you hook up before or after the regulator or the Throttle position sensor on the pump
