I am thinking more and more about ditching this thing on my buggy:screwy:

Last weekend went out to play and my friend rolled his buggy here in florance and about 2 seconds later I got to start screaming as the burning sensation of tranny fluid was on the lower half of my body, I was so irrational by the ordeal I tripped trying to get out and thus put a bruise on my knee that hurt even worse..:1zhelp:

so with my buggy Im thinking about ditching it all together, my thinking is that since it wont see to many miles, I could simply make a dip stick to stick only when I wanted to check it and just have a newer style dipstick tube handle for my plug that locks, or maybe some type of pressure insert or just a plug? any ideas?

or even having it bored out and threaded when the case it apart for rebuild and put a plug similar to a radiator drain?

I have found that even the locking dipstick tubes leak at times in a roll..

just thinking, other then checking fluid level it performs no other funtion I can think of?? venting it done soly by the vent sooooo?

situations like this guys suck..

HMM

wondering if the fact that it is flexable, makes it less likely to leak from the trans case where the grommet is.

that ones does not look as if the dip stick has a way of locking shut though like the 90's gm ones do.

I know a few guys running that set-up in there rock buggy's and have never had a problem.

Seems like a guy could rig up some sort of flex setup with hyd hose and some caps or something.

good to know, seems I may add some bling then when I get to that step:waytogo:

cant view.. the pic, have a link? damn I need to find my debit card:thinking:

Pick up phone , dial bank , open mouth , wait 2 or 3 days , open mailbox , remove debit card . Damn man , you mentioned needing one days ( yes days as in plural ) ago

only thing i hate about those lokar flexible dipsticks, is the diameter of the tube is TINY. i didn't have a funnel small enough to fit in it, and it takes FOREVER to fill 12 quarts of atf through a tiny hole like that, especially when you have to make a funnel out of cardboard.

That is so true!!! My brother has the lokar dipstick on his M-37 and it takes so long to add fluid

Does your engine dipstick leak too?

What I did w/ Patch's engine 'stick (for a different reason) was to braze the stick to the tube. Then I cut it with a tubing cutter and inserted a compression union fitting. Tightened up both ends and then backed off the top tube nut to just be hand tight. Now it doesn't leak dirt in or oil out and it's still easy to check the level.

For a trans tube I wouldn't use the compression fitting (assuming you could find one that large), I'd use an AN union fitting and tube nuts w/ sleaves. Could go with JIC if you want steel instead of aluminum fittings.
Would be a little trickier not disrupting the fluid level reading b/c the union fitting will extend the tube a bit. So you'll need to make two cuts.

With the lokar dipstick it is a pain in the ass to fill, it drains in very slowly. But mine came with a little "adapter" that goes on top if the stick and allows the use of a normal size funnel.

thats a neat idea!

hell some cars though, such as jetta's and passats do not even have a dip stick for the tranny any more, with my luck the tranny will break long before I ever need to change the fluid and filter lol

maybe a mini dipstick like marve had..just a dip stick cut down to five inches and a factory red locking dip stick cut down to size,

thanks for the ideas,

the lokar does sound like a pain but you dont have to fill a tranny that often

Personally I'd consider tapping the hole and puting in a plug and just fill as needed.

Could be worse, newer Exploders are a PAIN to fill.... The only way to check the fluid level is to remove the drain plug on the pan, install a tool(quickly) then see if the fluid comes out of the tube. If it overflows through the tube, its overfull, if it doesn't, fill it until it does come out of the hole(like a diff filling). Got to love Ford.
