I am going to lock the 14 bolt on my Jimmy. I have narrowed it down to a Detroit or Grizzly locker. Any opinions or recommendations?

You can't go wrong with a Detroit. I have heard a few grumblings about the Grizzly so I figured I would stick with the tried and true Detroit. I too considered both but with the $469 shipped price from summit, I couldnt pass.

if me and play a lot in snow arb

I had gov-loc in 14ff loved it . figured swap in Detroit for best strength . hated it in the snow over the gov-loc .

in snow open is best till you need it so you can drive in a straight line and not have to already be in 4wd to go straight with Detroit in rear .

that's just my past dealing in snow and Detroit.

never un satisfied with the Detroit operation . worked as said it would .

went back to gov-loc in rear for dd use and some play . new play toy has arb's front rear for best of both .

Since you only asked about detroit vs. grizzly. Not anything else

I would stick with the Detroit. Maybe even get a used one if $ is an issue. I see the take out ones on eBay a lot. I have heard a few things about the grizzly being a bit "notchy". In reality I would do whatever is cheaper.

I am looking for maximum deep snow traction. Jiminy gets used off road in the winter often and I can get stuck with my gov-loc.

I went with grizzly simply because you can actually talk to someone to get parts if it ever breaks

I have a d70 detroit in the front, that was free though

My grizzly seems is great, no complaints

I now have both in the same truck. A detroit in the front and a grizzly in the rear. While i have not finished the truck the biggest reasons for the grizzly was price, customer service, and guarentee. Yukon will pony up to $2000 for a rebuild if their parts failed. That is huge when you have a failure.

Grizzly mainly for what other guys have said. You can get parts for em.

I haven't seen a grizzly and detroit 14 b, but the 60 grizzly looks way better than the 60 detroit

If you head down to Cheston's house you can see a grizzly in a 14bff in my hunting truck he is building for me.

I have a grizzly in my 14 bolt and I love it. It's quiet and I never worry about it... it just works.

I've had the truck on the street with no weird side effects, the sand and obviously a lot of rocks.

I've also got a Detroit in my 9.5" 14 bolt in my Sierra, got a Smoking deal on it. The only reason I got it. Works fine, no complaints either.

Starting to look like its Yukon ftw!!

I blew up a Detroit in my 14ff. The side gears locked up and broke. Don't know how but it was only a month into using it. Sad part was I bought it and didn't put it in til after the warrantee ran out while gathering parts for my 3/4 ton swap. Next one will be a grizzly.

problem i dont like also in the snow is if full locked to start there is nothing to help save you if you get stuck . just like going in in 4wd and getting stuck . you have nothing left unless you have a winch and a place to pull from .

but each to his own i guess. i just been there and done it my self in snow.

How is an auto locker for the snow? More importantly, on iced roads? I've been debating which way to go and keep thinking auto in the rear might not be the best bet.

Was thinking auto in the front where I can unlock the hubs, and selectable in the rear...

Sorry don't mean to be a thread hijacker...

Iced roads it takes a totally different driving style. Every time you spin your back end starts going off the road, very rare are roads flat and with both tires spinning you slide to the down hill side on any kind of an iced road.

You also have to be more careful with throttle application, smooth is the key to driving safely on icy roads with an automatic locker.

I have had a rear locker in what I drove in the winter for nearly 14 years. Never bothered me much.

These are good relevant questions.

I'll save ox/arb/elock for another thread. :D

I'm thinking specifically about the roads I take to the trailheads around here. We don't have many flat roads anywhere in Calgary, especially when I hit the mountains 5 minutes from my place. Lots of long hills and none straight, all going up hill and turning at the same time.

Uphill and turning with an open diff on ice is bad enough, nevermind adding in an auto locker at the same time. There's no possibility of coasting up those guys.

The tru-trac or whatever it's called in my dodge d70 seems to work fine for now until I have an extra $1000 burning a hole in my pocket.

I have detroits front and rear, totally happy with them, the rear 14 bolt detroit was used already in the axle when I got it so I ran it...there were no grizzly lockers when I rebuilt my front axle so i really only chose the detroit over the selectable lockers, I never NEED 4x4 on the road where I live...
