i just got finished installed my 14 bolt and test drove it last night, when i turn it feels like i have a spool or it's welded and my rear tires chirp.

is that normal? if not how do i fix it?

Perfectly normal. By design it's locked 99% of the time and only unlocks when there is no pressure from the driveshaft and a need for differentiation (ie; coasting thru a tight turn). You may also notice almost a 1/4 turn of slop in the yoke, this too is normal.

I had a welded diff for 2 years, then went Detroit and the Detroit definitely does not feel anything like a welded diff in tight quarters. Did you remove the washers that used to live behind the spider gears? Leaving those in makes it so the Detroit can't unlock at all.

and a side note.. when you hear a loud bang... no one is shooting at you.. it is the detroit unloading!!!!!!!!!!!:wink1:

First time I ever heard that I was expecting to see fragged tranny parts laying on the ground behind me... :doah:

I heard it right after I put it in. I mean turning to pull out of the shop...Scared me sh*tless.

My favorite is the, "THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR AXLE!" comment I've gotten many times with my locked vehicles.

It's working perfect, thank you very much.

Right now i can't remember if i took the washers out or if i left them in. i guess i'm going to have to pull the carrier to see what's up...:doah:

Wouldn't it be easier to look at the parts you removed and see if they're there? :D

Actually, RootBreaker is correct. Sometimes when you stop after a turn or other reasons the detroit is "loaded" and the bang is the detroit unloading.

So you're saying the bang can be created by it unlocking?

that is the way I thought it to be.... from driving down a straight road... thought it was loaded up... then at a light... it was relaxed.. then taking off.. it unloaded on me...

either way it still scared the shaet out of me!!!!!!

If the noise were to come from the locker opening the I should be able to duplicate it on jackstands with some sort of low level ping or metallic pop. When you force it to unlock by hand it is silent except for a slight racheting sound while spinning.

The bang created by the locker is from the side gears snapping back together. You are hearing the teeth snap together as well as against the sides of each other (because it's turning). From an unlocked position, when accelerating the side gears rotate (because it's trying to differentiate) eventually lining up. Once lined up the outer springs force them into the center piece causing both the bang and sometimes a little jolt of torque steer.

I'm gonna say it has to be the Detroit locking rather than unlocking for one simple reason. It never happens under coast, it always happens when power is applied to it after a coast situation. Under power the Detroit is designed to never unlock. To unlock one side must overrun the speed of the carrier...

I've had mine "unload" after i've let off the gas while just starting to coast.

I've called and talked to a detroit locker tech and they told me it was "loaded" and was just "unloading".

I've never had the infamous 'bang' under a coast condition.

Oddly enough there is even a specific intersection here where it's happened three or four times. It's slightly downhill coming to the lights and the pavement is pretty uneven (lots of truck traffic through there). I'm thinking there is just enough goofiness going on that one side gear just starts to overrun the carrier by the time I coast to a stop.

When the light changes and I put some power to it, it locks violently enough to scare you if you haven't heard it before.

Rene, i've also had this happen when i was just about to back out of a parking space. I could start the truck, put it in reverse and the second i left off the brake "BANG" nothing happens other than the loud bang that scares the crap out of you and anyone standing near your truck.

Yeah, I know it's not harmful...sure scares the crap out of you the first time though. That kind of noise is usually never a good thing.
